Priscilla Presley's Style: The Fashion Lessons We Can Learn From The Icon

5/26/2013

Priscilla Presley was half of one of the most contentious couples in Hollywood. She and Elvis Presley met when she was only 14 years old and went on to marry just a few years later. Though society might not have approved of their relationship, she didn't seem to care.

Today, that self-assured attitude also translates to her style, and her propensity to push limits and try new trends has made this lady a fashion icon. In celebration of her 68th birthday (on May 24), we are taking a look back at Priscilla's best sartorial moments to date.

Here are six style lessons from the great Ms. Presley -- you might want to take notes.

1. You can never go wrong when you're in a jumpsuit.

2. A cowboy hat can really showcase your cheekbones.

3. Avril Lavigne isn't the only one who can pull off a tie.

4. Want to appear taller? Forget heels, you can get a few more inches with your hair!

5. Nothing is sexier than a LWD (little white dress).

6. A keyhole slit shows just the right amount of skin!

Priscilla Presley Asks Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam To Not Sign "Ag-Gag" Bill

Priscilla Presley Asks Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam To Not Sign "Ag-Gag" Bill
Thursday, May 09, 2013

Priscilla Presley has joined the group urging Governor Bill Haslam to veto Senate Bill 1248, the “ag gag” bill.

She said, "If you sign this bill into law you are making the statement that Tennessee farmers and our equine industry have something to hide. I don’t believe that’s in the best interest of our state. In addition, this bill gives anyone who records instances of animal cruelty 48 hours to report the violation and submit their video or audio recording to authorities.

By not giving anyone investigating animal cruelty enough time to collect evidence, this bill is set up to protect the abusers while failing to protect the welfare of the animals and livestock.”

In the 1980s Priscilla Presley hosted the reality television series about animals and their extraordinary lives, Those Amazing Animals. The show combined notable facts and entertainment and is considered a precursor to today’s popular Animal Planet and Discovery Channel. At present, Ms. Presley is involved with various horse rescue charities and animal-rights causes.

Help Chef Denis Martig Find His Photo of Elvis and Priscilla Presley's Wedding Cake Presentation

By Pamela Denney
May 6, 2013

In a city like Memphis where connections to Elvis are commonplace, Chef Denis Martig’s story still stands out.

I learned about Martig’s relationship with Elvis in an email with the subject tag “Researching a Very Special Picture.” Now an internationally recognized pastry chef consultant living in his home country of Switzerland, Martig’s Elvis story dates back to 1967 when he worked at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas.

Here is some of what he wrote in his email:

"I was employed by the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas in the capacity of pastry chef when I was called on to make the wedding cake for Elvis and Priscilla Presley. During the event, the bridal couple was presented to a large group of photographers in front of the wedding cake. At that time, I was introduced to the couple; we shook hands and had a brief chat. Dozens of flashlights went off precisely on that instant. Ever since that day I have been trying to get a copy of that picture. I have tried everything and thought just maybe your magazine would have a negative of that shot. Sadly, Memphis magazine doesn’t have a photo archive that dates back to 1967, so I’m hoping someone in Memphis or the extended Elvis community can help Chef Martig find his treasured photo. If you have any suggestions, please pass them along."

In the meantime, here is Martig’s description of the couple’s wedding cake:

“The cake itself was a yellow sponge cake. Each layer was filled twice with apricot marmalade and a kirsch flavored Bavarian cream. All the layers were glazed with kirsch flavored fondant icing and decorated with royal icing and marzipan roses.”

Elvis Presley and Priscilla Ann Beaulieu became Husband and Wife on May 1st 1967 at a wedding ceremony conducted at The  Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. The civil ceremony was performed by Nevada Supreme Court Justice David Zenoff.

The wedding was arranged by Elvis' manager, Col Tom Parker. The wedding ceremony took place in the suite of Casino owner Milton Prell, and the ceremony did not include many people. Instead only very close family members were invited by Col Tom Parker. Elvis' Co-Best Men were Marty Lacker, and Joe Esposito. Priscilla's Maid of Honor was her sister, Michelle.

According to a Las Vegas SUN news report, "Elvis wore a black brocade silk tuxedo and Western boots, while Priscilla wore a floor-length wedding gown of her own design: white silk chiffon, with beaded yoke, trimmed in seed pearls and topped with a three-foot tulle veil secured by a rhinestone crown."

The wedding ceremony was reported to have only lasted eight minutes, and it was then followed by a Press Conference and wedding reception with a breakfast buffet. The Presley's wedding cake was six-tiers. The wedding reception was attended by around 100 people including: extended family members, RCA and Sony business associates, and Elvis' entourage.

Elvis and Priscilla spent their honeymoon in Palm Springs, California at their home located at 1350 Ladera Circle.

On May 29th 1967, the Presley's had a second wedding reception which was held at Graceland for family, and friends who could not make it to Las Vegas.
