Lisa Marie Presley Hits The Road This Fall with Free Concert at Memphis' Levitt Shell

8/26/2013

Lisa Marie Presley Hits The Road This Fall with Free Concert at Memphis' Levitt Shell
August 26, 2013

Lisa Marie Presley will kick off the third leg of her “Storm & Grace” tour on August 27, including a free concert at the Levitt Shell in Memphis, where Elvis performed on July 30, 1954. For a list of Presley's upcoming tour dates visit LisaMariePresley.com/Tour.

Tickets are on sale now for the tour. VIP packages are available at select venues and include admission to the concert, a meet & greet and preshow Q&A/sound check, limited-edition items and more. Additional dates will be announced. Presley also plans to hit the road in early 2014 and is gearing up to record new material in the year ahead.

The extensive North American run will include a night at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles (September 1), a free show at Levitt Shell in Memphis (September 21) and an evening at City Winery in New York City (October 13). She will also perform at 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville on September 20 as part of the 14th Annual Americana Music Festival & Conference, curated by the Americana Music Association and presented by Nissan.

On her upcoming tour, Presley will be introducing fans to her new charity partner, World Vision.  Working in approximately 100 countries for over 60 years, World Vision addresses the root causes of poverty through, community development, disaster preparedness and response, and advocacy.  By asking her fans to join her in making the world a better place for children, Lisa is adding her voice to other World Vision artists, whose fans have already sponsored over one million children. Presley and her family sponsor children in Zambia, Myanmar, Ghana and Kenya.

“I am very excited to align myself and this tour with World Vision,” said Lisa Marie Presley, a longtime children’s advocate. “There will be a display table set up at each show with picture folders of children from all over the world who desperately need to be sponsored, which can be done simply by donating $35 a month. And sponsors can personally correspond with their sponsored children. I will consider it my personal duty to get as many of these children sponsored at each show as possible.”

"We are thrilled to partner with Lisa as she embarks on the Storm & Grace tour," said Michael Bianchi, Director of World Vision Artists.  "Her passion to ensure the well being of children around the world is a perfect fit with our mission. We look forward to doing great things together!"

You can check out Presley performing “Over Me,” the latest single from "Storm & Grace," in her new video, which can be seen here. Directed by Peter Zavadil (Lady Antebellum, The Black Keys, Eric Church), the clip was shot last fall during her show at Nashville’s Exit/In and recently premiered on CMT. Details on Presley’s upcoming live in-concert television special will be announced shortly.

During her first-ever visit to Sun Studio in Memphis, TN, Lisa shot a live video for “Weary,” another track from "Storm & Grace." The historic studio, considered by many to be the birthplace of rock & roll, was where her father, Elvis Presley, made his first recordings six decades ago.

Produced by 12-time GRAMMY winner T Bone Burnett, "Storm & Grace" marks Presley’s Universal Republic/XIX Recordings debut and follows 2005's "Now What" and her Gold-certified debut album, "To Whom It May Concern" (2003).

Lisa Marie Presley: Back In Force With New Album

Aug 22, 2013
by: FOX 11 Web Staff
Written by: Stormy Curry, Writer / Producer

It's been seven years since Lisa Marie Presley has released a new album...but now she's back in force. "Storm & Grace" is her newest one and she's playing the El Rey Theatre September 1. Steve and Maria asked her about the hiatus. she says it was about dealing with a lot of changes in her life.

"A lot of taking things apart and putting them back together, sort of starting from ground zero and redirecting a lot of things, refocusing."

Presley's latest songs have an Americana flavor, something she says was done by design. She also discusses teaming up with award winning musician and record producer T-Bone Burnett.

"The flavor was already in the demos...he comes in and adds all the icing to the cake and the bells and whistles and he has his take."

She also talks about being the daughter of a legend and playing music in his shadow.

"I know I have to prove myself, I know I have to win them over and do what I have to do and it's always fun..."

Presley also talks about her father and says she and the family still go to Graceland several times a year, including Thanksgivings.

"We try to keep it very homey...it can shut down easily and nicely and turn tight back into a home at night."

Presley also talks about the mischief she got into as a kid living at Graceland.

"We were in so much trouble all the time...throwing pool balls at each other...I would take a golf cart and run it through a fence. Nobody was ever watching us."

Fun Facts About Lisa Marie Presley:
  • She is the daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley.
  • As sole heir to Elvis' estate, Presley is the owner of Graceland, the Memphis mansion where her father lived, now a major tourist attraction. She has conducted a long career in the music business and has issued several albums and videos. Her work as vocalist and lyricist has ranged across country, blues and folk.
  • On April 8, 2003, Presley released her debut album, To Whom It May Concern. It reached No. 5 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and was certified gold in June 2003.
  • Presley appeared in Michael Jackson's 'You Are Not Alone' video in June 1995, directed by Wayne Isham.

Lisa Marie Presley continues to be involved, as does her mother Priscilla. Lisa Marie Presley retains 100% sole personal ownership of Graceland Mansion itself and its over 13-acre original grounds and her father's personal effects – meaning costumes, wardrobe, awards, furniture, cars, etc. She has made the mansion property and her father's personal effects permanently available for tours of Graceland and for use in all of EPE's operations.

Lisa Marie Presley - Seattle Times interview

8/25/2013

PicturePhoto is COPYRIGHT: Kevin Hess

Surprisingly down-to-earth after a lifetime in the public eye, Lisa Marie Presley is a platinum recording artist in her own right. But she still wishes she had time to learn to knit.

By Nicole Brodeur

There will be no questions about the marriage to Michael Jackson.

Same with the brief stint as Mrs. Nicolas Cage. Not a word.

And as for her longtime membership in the Church of Scientology? No. Just ... no.

But that still left plenty to ask Lisa Marie Presley, the child of Graceland with her father’s bedroom eyes, smile verging on sneer, and a lifelong desire to make her own musical mark.

Presley, 45, will be in Seattle on Aug. 28 to perform at The Triple Door in support of her latest album, “Storm & Grace.”

The stop is part of the third leg of a tour that started last year and that has not worn her down a bit.

“I love it, I personally love it,” Presley said the other day of life on the road. “I find it challenging and stimulating and exciting. The relationship with the fans, the reactions."

“I’m lucky because I have my husband and family with me, back and forth, between England and California.”

Presley spends most of her time in Tunbridge Wells, England, where she lives with her husband, the guitarist and producer Michael Lockwood, and their twin daughters, Harper and Finley, now four. Presley has two older children — the model and actress Riley Keough, 24, and musician Benjamin Keough, 20 — by her first husband, Danny Keough.

She moved to England in 2011 specifically to work on ”Storm & Grace.” And then she just stayed.

“I was writing, living over there temporarily to write the record and I just fell in love with it,” she said. “I loved having a whole ’nother option in another country. We started from ground zero and we just build a life for ourselves. Simple, and in the country.”

And yet, she still couldn’t get away from her father’s legacy.

“There’s a little shrine to him right near my house,” she said. “He’s very much alive and well in England. I just like to have a life, different places to go, away from other things. I need to have options.”

As the sole heir to the Graceland estate and all its tourist-fed trappings, Presley doesn’t need to work. But she does need to create, and music seems to make sense, with a last name like hers.

Her first album, “To Whom It May Concern,” was released in 2003. The album’s first single, “Lights Out,” reached No. 18 on the Billboard Hot Adult Top 40 chart.

Her second album, “Now What,” released in 2005, reached No. 9 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Both albums have been certified platinum.

“Storm & Grace,” released last year, partnered Presley with award-winning producer T-Bone Burnett, known for his soundtrack work on “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and “Crazy Heart,” as well as his work with everyone from Elvis Costello to jazz singer Cassandra Wilson to Washington state’s Brandi Carlile.

“The sound was already defining itself,” Presley said. “Sonically, it was already present, and T-Bone added the icing on the cake.”

The combination of Burnett’s distillery and Presley’s newfound calm and maturity has made for a soulful, retrospective sound that is more Americana than her other albums.

“It has all different things,” Presley said. “It’s organic, more rootsy.”

SUN STUDIO
The video for one song, “Weary,” was shot at Memphis’ Sun Studios, where Elvis Presley made some of his first records; where Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and U2 recorded; and where Bob Dylan famously kissed the floor.

“I didn’t kiss the floor,” she said with a chuckle. “But it was really great, and we recorded three songs there.”

Despite her father’s history with the place, Presley had never set foot inside Sun Studios before she and her band loaded in to perform three songs for a television show.

“I was pretty insulated,” Presley explained. “My father was no longer recording there when I was around.”

Presley is one of those people who was born famous, had access to presidents and pop stars (she married Jackson in 1994, after being friends most of their lives), but barely lets on. She’s like the person who will walk into an exclusive party, come out and tell you who was there and what they did, but really, it’s not that great.

She is also surprisingly straightforward. Her words and actions are her own, unvarnished and refreshing. (Once asked by Oprah Winfrey what she says to herself when she thinks of her marriage to Jackson, she replied: “Holy mother of God,” put her head in her hand — and put Winfrey and the audience in stitches.)

So it makes sense that there is no magic to her songwriting, no spells spun, no mystery.

“I sit with the intention to write a record,” she said. “When I’m doing interviews, I’m doing interviews and when I am writing, I’m writing. I sit there with a musician and I write. It’s the same process since I started writing in my twenties. I like to come in and leave with a finished song.”

At home with twins, her two other grown children off in Los Angeles and the Elvis business that never seems to slow, Presley has little time for quieter activities like reading or knitting.

“I wish I could get into something like that,” she said of knitting. “Riley was trying to reach me how to knit, and I am unteachable. I was trying really hard.

“I wish I could do horses, or have a hobby. Usually I am just running around. Between all four children and my husband, I don’t get to do much. But when I am in England I cook and I garden and it’s much more calming and relaxed.”

She has partnered with World Vision and is allowing the nonprofit to set up a booth at each show, where fans can choose to sponsor — and correspond — with a child in need.

The child of Graceland clearly knows how lucky she was.

“I like helping children,” she said. “I have a big thing with children. You can correspond with the child, send something to them as a gift. You know it’s actually getting there and you are doing something to help. I just thought it was a good thing to do. I want to help them because they are helpless.

“But they are also the future. They are going to run the world.”

LISA MARIE PRESLEY- Ambassador for the Arts and Advocacy
As the only child of Elvis Presley and Pricilla Presley, Lisa Marie Presley has been in the public eye since before she was born and was tasked with the daunting challenge of finding her own path while still maintaining her family connection and love for her southern roots.  Since debuting as a singer-songwriter-composer in 2003, she has tenaciously grown as a respected musical artist. On June 12, 2005, Ms. Presley received recognition as ‘Favorite Female rock Vocalist’ from ASYM, the Association of Songwriters and Young Musicians. Her latest album, the 2012 released Storm & Grace, is a “raw, powerful country, folk and blues collection that finds her embracing her Southern roots and family name” states Rolling Stone Magazine.  Ms. Presley debuted the album on several television programs across the USA including Good Morning America, American Idol, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and a debut performance at the Grand Ole Opry. Critics have called it “Presley’s strongest album of her career; a moody masterpiece, exploring the demons and angels of her life to the tune of country-spiced downbeat pop.”

Continuing in her parent’s footsteps of advocacy and philanthropy, Ms. Presley has supported a variety of causes throughout her life from literacy and education to relief services for victims of natural disasters.  Ms. Presley co-founded the Literacy, Education and Ability Program (LEAP) a free program for children of all ages in Memphis, Tennessee. She is Chairperson of The Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation (EPCF), which continues Elvis’ own tradition of community service and philanthropy. One of its programs, Presley Place, provides homeless families up to one year of rent-free housing, child day care, career and financial counseling, family management guidance and other tools to help them break the cycle of poverty and regain independence. She supports the Grammy Foundation’s Signature School Program which provides monetary grants to High School music programs across the USA. On June 24, 2011, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam proclaimed a day of recognition for Lisa Marie Presley to honor her charitable efforts.

Lisa Marie Presley Talks About Dad, Golf Carts And Her New Album with T-Bone Burnett

Lisa Marie Presley Talks About Dad, Golf Carts And Her New Album with T-Bone Burnett
August 1, 2013

Lisa Marie Presley is back on the music scene with a stellar album called Storm And Grace - a mix of rock and alt-country, if I could be so bold to name it. T-Bone Burnett has put his wonderful touch on these great songs.

With this album, she’s on a very important tour, (Aug 28 at The Triple Door in Seattle) — to rebrand herself away from the ‘pop star’ and ‘daughter-of’ labels. She’s a down-to-earth and friendly conversationalist – and happy to talk about Dad.

Click here to listen to the entire interview with Lisa Marie Presley from Jack FM Seattle!

Q: What’s been going on with you for 7 long years between albums?
Lisa: "Oh, God, everything. You need time sometimes in between things – lots of changes. I had babies (twin girls 4 years ago). Things happen. Life."

Q: Is it good to get away from pop music on Storm And Grace?
Lisa: "I was never supposed to be in the pop era. People in the past just didn’t know how to market me. So this one is just more comfortable and normal and it’s just easier. T-Bone Burnett producing it helps to give it that feel. It’s been a growing process as well. Each record has been in a growing time of my life where I was doing something and going through something that I was writing about."

Q: In the video of Over Me, your band –the Black Lillies – looks like an old rock medicine show.
Lisa: "That’s a nice version of what I’ve heard them called before – my husband is sitting right here – they called them morticians and undertakers…" (laughing)

Q: Did you write all of these songs on Storm and Grace?
Lisa: "I write everything. I wrote all the songs and agree on a melody. Then they leave me alone in a room and I’ll labor over the lyrics – sometimes 3 to 7 hours. I like to walk out with a song finished by the end of the day."

Q: Your press release talks about you as a kid, obsessively playing 45’s on your record player, and catching your dad singing into a hairbrush in the mirror.
Lisa: "Reverse that. He caught me."

Q: Ooops! Okay then, has music always come easy to you?
Lisa: "Yes, it’s always been important to me. Obviously it would have been easier for me if I’d picked some other profession. (laughs) But I love music so much, it’s always been a part of my life. And writing, I’ve always thought of myself as a singer-songwriter –it’s not like I’m trying to be or do anything other than that. For me, if I was around in the Carol King days and Linda Ronstat, I’d fit in fine – because there were a lot of female singer-songwriters that weren’t full of other stuff. It was pretty simple back then."

Q: But you’re around in the time of Lucinda Williams…
Lisa: "That is very true. Good. Shelby Lynn and Bonnie Raitt. I mean there’s plenty of amazing, incredible… Jesus, there’s Heart. A lot, too many to name."

Q: If you weren’t the daughter of the King, what kind of celebrity would you want from your music?
Lisa: "I had the celebrity before the music. I always have to struggle to conquer – that’s one element and I get it – that’s one element, and that’s where the music is. This is what you read, and I get it, that other persona. But that’s not what this music’s about, that’s not what I do it for. And back then, people didn’t get nearly as much, it wasn’t as crazy, celebrity-wise for people."

Lisa: "I know people look at me for whatever various reasons for whatever they heard. I can see it on their face, I can sense when the music is actually reaching people. And that is why I do what I do, I would never do this for the celebrity."

Q: Talk to us about doing duets with your dad, Natalie Cole style.
Lisa: "We’ve done it 3 times. I usually do it on the anniversary of his death, August 16th, There’s usually a huge event in Memphis, and I do it for the fans. Steven Foster produced the first and second one – Don’t Cry, Daddy, and In the Ghetto. I did it to raise money for a housing project. And the third one I just did with T-Bone. I never marketed them or cashed in on them, they were for a specific reason."

Q: The latest one is I Love You Because – with beautiful harmonies – how do you get through that recording emotionally?
Lisa: "I can’t think that way while I do it, but afterward I will. I have to think technically. He’s (Elvis) is going to sound absolutely brilliant and perfect as always, and I have to come in here and not ruin the song – that’s normally what I’m thinking." (laughing)

Q: What are your favorite movies of your Dad’s?
Lisa: "If I had to chose, Love Me Tender, Jailhouse Rock and King Creole, I also liked a lot."

Q: Why?
Lisa: "They were actually more serious, and more in the realm of what he wanted to be doing than what happened later. He had fun, but he wanted to be a serious actor, and in those, you can see he was very capable of it."

Q: What’s your favorite memory of your dad?
Lisa: "Being alone with him, he’d get me up in the middle of the night and take me off somewhere in his golf cart. He was nocturnal. And I could pretty much run unsupervised around Graceland. I was talking to my cousin and we can’t understand why we didn’t kill each other, we were always in trouble. But spending time alone with him (dad) in the middle of the night, I liked the most. He’d get up and say we were going to a pet store or on a ride somewhere or to an amusement park. He’d take me to my Grandfather’s alone. That kind of stuff I just really liked."

Q: You’ll be playing at The Triple Door on August 28th here in Seattle. Have you seen the movie, It Happened At The State Fair (filmed in Seattle)?
Lisa: "Yes I have."

Q: Will you go up in the Space Needle where your dad was?
Lisa: "Yes. This tour is a big one and if I have extra time, I will. We don’t have that many days off."

You’ve been a joy to talk to, Lisa Marie Presley. Thank you.

Lisa: "All right, thank you."

Riley Keough on the best advice from Kate Moss

BY ZARA WONG
August 5th 2013

As the new face of Bonds, the model and actress talks about her personal style and her love of acting.

Q: How would you describe your personal style?
Riley: "Comfy, eclectic and colorful."

Q: What are your favourite pieces in your wardrobe?
Riley: "Probably all of my coats."

Q: Do you have any amazing pieces from your parents?
Riley: "My father gave me a ring that was his when he was 18 that I wear every day. That’s probably the most memorable thing they’ve given me. It’s a really cool – sort of silver with copper bands around it. That’s my favorite, and it’s lucky. "

Q: What is the best advice you've been given about fashion?
Riley: "I met Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell at the fashion shows and they were so nice. They told me to have fun and not to take it too seriously."

Q: What inspired you to go into acting?
Riley: "I pretty much always wanted to be in film. When I was really young I wanted to direct and had planned to go to film school.  I never got around to it because of work, but I'd still like to go eventually. I guess being able to do films and watch is the best way now."

Q: What are your favourite beauty products?
Riley: "I’m pretty simple with those kinds of things. I use really good conditioner or I’ll get dread locks. I wash my face a lot. I don’t use one particular brand, I like changing and trying new stuff. There’s a brand called Scientific Organics I use on my face that I really like."

Q: How do you maintain your hair?
Riley: "I try and keep my hair healthy, get it trimmed when it needs it and condition it. My hair will start to dread if I don’t use a handful because it’s so curly."

Q: What are your favourite fragrances?
Riley: "I like sweet things and things that smell like I’m in a garden."

Q: Who do you admire and why?
Riley: "The people I admire the most would be my parents, my family, and my best friends; they’re pretty amazing people. Then there’s always, you know, Obama."

Q: What was working on the Bonds campaign like?
Riley: "It was really fun and easy. Matt Irwin is the best and all the Bond guys were really funny and sweet which kept my high regard of Australians intact. I don’t like when things like this are taken too seriously and aren’t any fun, and I've found that Australians are good at not doing that."

Q: What do you look for in underwear and what are your favourite Bonds pieces?
Riley: "I just like them to be comfortable and fit well. I love the lace underwear, the t-shirts and the sports bras. Everything I’ve tried on thus far has been really lovely and fits really well, which is what I find most annoying about most other underwear and bras."

Q: What keeps you motivated?
Riley: "Probably wanting to be in a position where I can help others. That, and enjoying myself. I am happiest when I’m doing what I love."
