Expect surprises at this summer’s James Burton International Guitar Festival.
The three-day festival —Aug. 22-24— includes a special guest at the Aug. 23 concert who attendees won’t find out until the evening performance. The same concert also could feature a separate potential performer organizers are tight-lipped about, other than to say, “You’re going to want the grandbaby to come on time.”
The mystery performers will join a lineup of more than 20 musicians including country singer Trace Adkins, contemporary Christian singer Lincoln Brewster and Noel Haggard, son of country legend Merle Haggard. The festival also will include a handful of special guests, including Priscilla Presley, former wife of music legend Elvis Presley, whom Burton played with, and Mike Wolfe, star of the History Channel’s “American Pickers.”
The festival will be anchored this year by Burton’s 75th birthday. Festivities will include a Friday night celebration in the Red River District.
Burton, born Aug. 21, 1939, in Webster Parish, is legendary in the music world for his lead guitar work with Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis, John Denver, Emmylou Harris and Elvis Costello.
“Municipal allows us to have a rich and storied history in the world of music and James Burton is such a tremendous part of that,” Shreveport Councilman Jeff Everson said.
Everson said simply having a festival that celebrates his contributions to music heritage is incredible, but on top of that, the festival’s expansion has enabled it to become a tourist attraction for the city.
“It’s so great they’ve expanded this beyond just the Saturday night event to include some of the other assets like the Red River District,” said Kelly Wells with the Shreveport Convention and Tourist Bureau.
The James Burton International Guitar Festival was created in the spring of 2005 to help raise funds for the James Burton Foundation. The Foundation is dedicated to providing music training and instruments to children and young adults in shcools and hospitals and nurturing the creative abilities of children.
