Martina McBride has released one of the tracks on her forthcoming album, Everlasting. She puts her soulful spin on Elvis Presley‘s monster 1969 hit “Suspicious Minds."
In an interview with USA Today, McBride explained why she decided to record the track.
“There aren't very many female versions of that song, and It makes sense for a woman to sing it. I focused on the lyrics on this record. This one is about reacting to jealousy and being possessive. Which women can really relate to.” McBride said.
It turns out Martina McBride and Elvis Presley have something else in common with the song: the guitar player. Guitarist Reggie Young played on both Presley’s original and McBride’s recent recording of “Suspicious Minds.”
“We really wanted him on that song,” McBride said. “Don, McBride's husband goes, ‘What do you want to play?’ Reggie says, ‘I can play this or I can play that. Or I can just play what I played on the Elvis record. I was, like, ‘Hold up! Take a moment! You don’t hear that every day.’ It was so cool. So at the very end of the song, he’s doing the Elvis lick.
McBride’s Everlasting will be released via her own Vinyl Recordings label on April 8th, 2014.
