The marker will be placed at its former location, where a Family Dollar Store is today. If all goes well, we may have a marker ceremony in January 2014. Below is the marker text.
American Studios "American Studios, a cornerstone of the explosive Memphis music industry in the 1960s, stood on this site. Opened in 1962 by record producer Chips Moman, American featured a versatile group of musicians known as the 827 Thomas Street Band, later the Memphis Boys. They worked with scores of artists, such as Elvis Presley, the Box Tops, King Curtis, Neil Diamond, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Joe Tex, B.J. Thomas and Bobby Womack. During its heyday, American produced 15 top ten pop music hits on the Billboard “Hot 100” chart. Overall, more than 120 American recordings not only reached the pop charts but also those for rhythm & blues, country and even jazz. American closed in 1972 with the loss of its last big label contract with Atlantic Records and Moman's decision to relocate to Atlanta. " Elvis Presley at American Studios "To revive his recording career, Elvis Presley came to American Studios in 1969. Spending much of the 1960's making movies, Elvis saw his status as a pop singer had faded. Seeking a comeback, he worked with Chips and the 827 Thomas Street Band. Together they mixed Elvis' unique talent with American's trademark blend of country, pop and rhythm & blues. The collaboration worked. The sessions turned out such hits as “Suspicious Minds,” “In the Ghetto,” “Don't Cry Daddy” and “Kentucky Rain.” with music critics hailing these recordings as some of his best, Elvis quickly returned to the top of the charts." By the way, we (the same folks who created the Plastic Products marker) will create a marker for Poplar Tunes. source: Mike Freeman The original sign for Crown Electric where Elvis drove a truck will soon be on display at Sun Studio. The sign was donated to Sun by Adrian Keller who worked for James Tipler, the owner of Crown Electric, at the end of the 1980's. October 28, 2013 Every Elvis fan can recall the moment they fell in love with the king and the same goes for actress Raquel Welch, who recently sat down with the Wall Street Journal to share her memories of seeing Elvis live in concert at the cusp of stardom. Fans can read the entire article titled "Lovestruck on Lonely Street" by visiting WSJ.com. Welch sat down for an interview with Wall Street Journal reporter Marc Myers to talk about her book "Beyond the Cleavage." Welch talks about seeing Elvis perform at the San Diego Arena in 1956, as "Heartbreak Hotel" ruled the radio airwaves. "Hearing that song was a real turning point for me as a teenager. When I saw him in action, he was mesmerizing. I screamed myself silly," states Welch. "He had that emotional, erotic intensity that was impossible to resist." Welch talks about this pivotal moment in her life in great detail, even describing Elvis' complete attire, dance moves and how his hair would fall over his eyes. "Whenever I hear 'Heartbreak Hotel' now, it takes me back. It reminds me of what a force Elvis was. He still is today. Sometimes I get misty-eyed over the whole thing." October 25th 2013 If Elvis can be the inspiration for a series of Zippo lighters, stage musicals, tequila and a currently-in-development movie, then it stands to reason that he should also be the subject of a college class. The lecture is based on his class at the university, Elvis Presley and America, and is open to the public. Hughes has researched, published and taught extensively on music and Southern history. With this book, I will try to..." -Ginger Alden From Amazon: "Elvis Presley and Graceland were fixtures in the life of Ginger Alden, having been born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. But she had no idea that she would play a part in that enduring legacy as Elvis Presley’s fiancée, and his last great love. For over three decades Ginger has held the truth of their relationship close to her heart. In her own words Ginger details their whirlwind romance—from first kiss to his stunning proposal of marriage. She details his exploration of Eastern religions, his perception of being a “legend,” his devotion to family and friends, and her attempt to know the insular group surrounding Elvis. For the very first time she talks about the devastating end of it all, and the 80,000 mourners and reporters who descended on Graceland in 1977, exposing Ginger to the reality of living in the spotlight. Above it all, Alden rescues Elvis from the hearsay, rumors, and tabloid speculations of his final year by shedding a frank yet personal light on a very public legend." Elvis Presley fans have had a special relationship with the Regional Medical Center for many years and holiday gift-giving for the Elvis fan in your life just got easier. The much-loved Elvis Presley Souvenir License Plates are now available at ThemedFoundation.org. In 1983, then Shelby County Mayor Bill Morris dedicated the trauma center at The MED, in Elvis’s name. At the dedication, Elvis fans collectively gave $50,000 to the trauma center, becoming the seed capital for The MED Foundation, the hospital’s philanthropic arm. Back in 2005, the Regional Medical Center partnered with Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc., to offer the first authentic license plate bearing the image of Elvis Presley. Since then, Tennessee drivers purchasing the license plates have generated more than $114,000 for the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center. The money is used to purchase state-of-the-art equipment for the trauma center and provide training for front line staff, all of which helps to save lives. In recent years, The MED completed work on a new Trauma Training and On-Call Center funded in part with revenue from these souvenir license plates. Elvis fans from across the globe continue to call and email The MED Foundation to request the license plate, which is available only to licensed Tennessee drivers. To meet this broader demand, The MED Foundation and Elvis Presley Enterprises developed and released the souvenir license plate in 2010. In addition to being the only level-one trauma center in a 150 mile radius of Memphis, the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center is the only health care facility in the world to bear Elvis’s name. These specialty plates are available to purchase on The MED Foundation’s online store. source: http://www.elvis.com - Graceland/Elvis Presley Enterprises Upcoming Highlights on SiriusXM's Elvis Radio - Channel 19

The property is at 1215 Gallatin Road South, Madison Tennessee located near downtown Nashville. The current owner Steve North is taking his retirement from practicing law. The home has 3 bedrooms and offers 3,000 square feet of space. Rocklogy is using eBay to sell the property. The reserve price is $100,000 - the minimun price the seller will accept. From the eBay auction: "The "Holy Grail" of music management offices is available for sale to the most discriminating "collector" and Elvis Presley / music history aficionado. The Colonel Tom Parker Management Office on Gallatin Pike in Madison stands as a testament to the old cliché, "if these walls could talk." As confined within this cluster of unassuming stone buildings the walls would tell of unconventional business dealings, old venues booked, and colorful stories of how a Dutch immigrant managed the career of the greatest voice the world has ever heard...the most significant charismatic recording artist to grace a stage, Elvis Presley. Eddy Arnold, Hank Snow, and numerous other "Country & Western" recording artists also had their careers negotiated from these office. Photos and books document casual "drop ins" to see the Colonel. The property would eventually become the North Law Office. The property remains extremely well maintained, having retained much of the original 1950's charm, as noted in the knotty pine paneling, entertainment bar, and pink-and-black and aqua tiled bathrooms. The home has been extremely well preserved over the years, decades from 1956 and 1957 when Elvis would swing by from recording sessions at RCA or en-route back to Memphis, to Audubon Drive or mansion on the hill....Graceland." The property is available for commercial considerations and appropriate branding / brand exploitations are all possibilities based on the zoning and major traffic flow vicinity. Any questions regarding this criteria and the history of the property can be directed through eBay or via a call to Rockology. Naturally, on-site viewing is available with prior arrangements for qualified buyers only. We request any music fan and / or interested party not ask to see the property alone as it remains a functioning law office. Click here to check out the entire eBay listing! |
