'Change of Habit' Director William A. Graham has passed away

9/29/2013

Picture
William A. Graham who directed Elvis Presley's final film and the pilots for The Big Valley and Police Story, passed away September 12, 2013 of complications from pneumonia. He was 87 years old.

During his long career Graham also helmed the movies 'Honky' (1971) and 'Return to the Blue Lagoon' (91). He earned an Emmy nomination and also directed three episodes of The X-Files in the 1990s. In the '60s, he directed a number of TV series including Naked City, The F.B.I, The Fugitive and Batman.

His also directed the telemovie 'Elvis and the Colonel: The Untold Story' (1993), with Rob Youngblood as Elvis Presley and Beau Bridges as Col. Tom Parker.

Earlier, Graham (right with Elvis) directed the real Elvis in Change of Habit (1969), which has the rock 'n' roll legend, in his last film, playing a doctor opposite Mary Tyler Moore as a nun.

In an interview about Elvis, William Graham noted that he talked Presley into changing his famous hairstyle for the film.
"He had a kind of a pompadour in front and his hair was full of grease. And because this was a movie about a doctor working in the ghetto, it just didn't seem to be quite the right hairstyle, so I talked to him and I said, 'Elvis, how would you feel about changing your hair a little bit?' Well, he said he would be open to the idea. In the end we washed all the grease out of his hair and modified the styling and it was quite a landmark achievement. It was pretty unusual to get that done. And Elvis actually liked it very much.

Elvis was wonderful to work with and honestly was the nicest man I ever met in my life. Elvis called everyone 'Sir' or 'M'am' - from the gate guard at the studio all the way up to the head of the studio. Elvis was very responsive to direction. He didn't show any of the kind of ego, the kind of temperament that you would expect from a big star -- and he was a big star. Soemtimes Elvis would come out and sit around on the set and bring out his guitar and he would sing and play for us, lots of songs like 'Hound Dog' or 'Blue Suede Shoes' and this was wonderful for us. Elvis made being on the movie set a real thrill for the whole crew".

Adorable baby dress worn by Lisa Marie Presley, for sell by Patsy Andersen

9/26/2013

Picture
Patsy Andersen, former 22 year employee of Elvis Presley's Graceland would like to sell a dress worn by Lisa Marie Presley as a baby. The adorable baby dress worn by Lisa is in perfect condition and has been cared for with love.

From Patsy Andersen:
"Todd Morgan and I did the very first exhibit of Elvis and Lisa, and I chose this little dress as part of the exhibit. Aunt Delta escorted me to a trunk located inside the attic which she very lovingly opened, and there was all of Lisa's baby clothes! They were all clean, ironed and lovingly put into this trunk. I was amazed as most baby clothes were given to friends for their babies or given to the Goodwill but these were lovingly cared for and I was amazed! I then selected the baby clothes of Lisa which I wanted to put on display. This little dress was my favorite as it was so dainty and girly looking! When we changed the exhibit out, I took the clothes back to Aunt Delta but she would not take the dress back, and instead she gave it to me. I did not want to take Lisa's baby dress, but you did not say "No" to Aunt Delta and live! I was going to put the dress into a shadow box to hang beside a photo of Lisa. But Lisa's baby dress needs to be seen and really cared for! I would like to sale Lisa Marie Presley's baby dress."

VIDEO of Graceland Voted 2013 #1 Iconic American Attraction Now Available
September 25, 2013

It’s official. Elvis Presley’s Graceland has been selected as 10Best.com’s “Best Iconic American Attraction” by readers of USA TODAY. In a multi-week voting period that lasted through September 9, readers from across the country voted on the American attraction that best represents the United States.

Posted on 10Best.com, "The name is synonymous with Memphis and with rock 'n' roll. But for the shy young man who bought this house to give his family privacy in the wake of his meteoric rise to stardom, Graceland was only one thing - home. From the moment one steps on the 13-acre estate, it’s obvious that Graceland equaled love and sanctuary for Elvis."

When asked about the award in an interview with USATODAY.com, Lisa Marie Presley was very surprised. She stated, "Wow. That's really incredible. I'm very humbled and flattered to hear that. It's incredible . . . it's just incredible."

In addition to Graceland, there were many other great attractions chosen by readers including the National Civil Rights Museum here in Memphis, a must see attraction when visiting the city. Others included Mt. Rushmore (SD), Grand Canyon (AZ), Statue of Liberty (NY), Las Vegas Strip (NV) and the Golden Gate Bridge (CA).

Ready to see Graceland for yourself? Check out a photo tour and book your trip with one of the great specials and packages available to experience your own rock 'n' roll pilgrimage.

"Nobody" short film cast has been announced!

9/25/2013

Drake Milligan - as Elvis Presley

Picture
Mr. Drake Milligan has been a passionate Elvis fan since eight years of age, and has spent countless hours listening to and reading about his life and career. In addition to his avid appreciation for the legend, Drake has been fortunate enough to have met and spent time with many people who befriended and worked with Elvis. His evolution into performing as an Elvis Presley Tribute Artist has been gradual, as he is most concerned with giving his audiences a realistic tribute to the icon, and humble man who changed the music industry. Mr. Milligan takes this role in "Nobody" very seriously and will do his best to honor Elvis during his final semester at Humes High School.

Natasha Rudis - as Gladys Presley

Picture
Mrs. Natasha Rudis found her love for Elvis the first time she laid eyes on the him, during a viewing of his iconic 1968 Comeback Special. Learning about Elvis’ life was an inevitable interest that allowed Natasha to better understand his sincerity and compassion for music and family. Being a part of “Nobody” is a dream come true, because it will give Mrs. Rudis the chance to breathe life into the legend of Gladys Presley; an honor as a woman, mother and loyal follower of her beloved son.

Pam Williams - as Miss Mildred Scrivener

Picture
Mrs. Pam Williams, a Memphis local, has been an Elvis fan for many years and is thrilled to be a part of “Nobody.” With extensive years of working as a substitute teacher, her role as Miss Mildred Scrivener seems nothing short of fitting. She actually attended one of Elvis’ most legendary concerts: the March, 1974 performance held at the Mid-South Coliseum, which was later released on the album, “Elvis: Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis.” She enjoys everything in Elvis’ music repertoire, and especially appreciates his gospel recordings. Mrs. Williams is ecstatic that she will be able to contribute to our film, and in turn, Elvis Presley’s legacy.

"Nobody" is a short film by filmmaker, William Bryan. The film chronicles the story of Elvis Presley, before he achieved world-wild stardom and became recognized as the international superstar, Elvis Presley. At Humes High School in the year of 1953, Elvis was 18 years old and he was considered to be a bit of a loner. Elvis was not an Athlete, he wore flashy clothing & he carried around a guitar, and he truly liked music class. After accomplishing super-stardom, Elvis was known as a sex symbol; but at Humes High School the girls didn't really want to date him! "Nobody" will feature a detailed account of the 1953 Humes High School talent show which occurred April 9, 1953. Elvis reluctantly entered the talent show after being swayed by those who grasped his enchantment of music. As fate would have it the audience loved Elvis at the talent show, and he captured first place at the 1953 Humes High School talent show! "Nobody" also highlights the very vital and unbreakable Mother and Son relationship between Elvis and his Mother Gladys Presley. While at Humes Elvis connected with his homeroom teacher a stern woman, by the name of Miss Mildred Scrivener, who was a well respected authority figure at Humes High School.

Lisa Marie Presley's Memphis Homecoming!

9/25/2013

photos are COPYRIGHT: Caroline Pratt
Picture
Photo with Lisa shared above was taken by Robert Dye - the official Graceland photographer.
Elvis Presley Fans of Nashville, President Caroline Pratt had the grand honor of meeting Elvis' Daughter, Lisa Marie Presley and her Mother, Priscilla Presley.

Lisa was in Memphis Saturday night, September 21st performing a show at The Levitt Shell and after the show Lisa held a VIP event at Graceland which benefited the charity World Vision. Lisa's Memphis show and Caroline's VIP experience, thanks to the Elvis Insiders forum contest was a wonderful and absolutely astonishing night to remember!

The VIP event with Lisa at Graceland inside the automobile museum included a sweet and personal Q&A session which Priscilla also participated in, and an informative special night tour of Graceland Mansion with Angie Marchese Director of the Graceland Archives. Angie told us practically everything we ever wanted to know regarding Elvis' beloved Graceland Mansion. Angie even let us photograph a kitchen drawer which Lisa wrote her name inside as a child! Before touring we enjoyed Lisa's favorite Memphis foods which were provided by Corky's and among the food choices were very tasty BBQ Nachos. All VIP's we were given a gift-bag with an autographed photo & other Lisa related tour items! A Meet & Greet and photo opportunity with Lisa was also included and our photos with Lisa were taken by Robert Dye, the official Graceland Photographer. Lisa chatted for a few minutes with every VIP and as always she was beyond gracious.

Caroline has been very blessed to have met Lisa Marie Presley several times, and she is forever grateful for the opportunity. Lisa is fantastic, caring, and always gracious! Lisa, thank you for your very soothing music which is very meaningful. Thank you for allowing Elvis fans to tour your childhood home, and thank you for everything you do, and most note-worthily thank you for being you!

Priscilla Presley was a very appreciated surprise at Lisa's VIP event!  Caroline had yearned to meet Priscilla and she is grateful the opportunity finally became a reality. Meeting Priscilla was a wonderful and cherished moment. Priscilla is very sweet, kind, and talkative. Priscilla is absolutely everything Caroline ever envisioned her being, a classy lady. Any VIP who longed to meet Priscilla did as she benevolently conversed with fans, posed for photos, and signed autographs! Thank you, Priscilla for opening Graceland to the public and thank for everything you do in Elvis' name and for charities.

The Levitt Shell is formerly, known as The Overton Park Shell, where Lisa's Father Elvis gave his first paid performance July 30th 1954 when he was the opening act for Slim Whitman. 59 years later Elvis, Daughter Lisa took the very same stage! The crowd for Lisa's show was huge and was said to have been the largest concert crowd ever at The Levitt Shell. There were fans who arrived at 8:00am to obtain their places for the show and to of course check sound check and maybe a sighting of Lisa. Lisa took the stage at 7:30pm and she wore a gorgeous black dress, with black boots. The show was amazing, the sound was awesome, Lisa interacted a lot with the crowd and several times she told the crowd how much she loved Memphis! In addition Lisa also told one lined stories about growing up in Memphis. Priscilla Presley, Lisa's Mother attended the show and she sat in the door way of the left side of the stage. Lisa and Micheal Lockwood's twins, Harper & Finely sat on Priscilla's lap during the show. Priscilla came out to the stage for a quick hello, and the twins Harper & Finley were also on stage for a quick moment!  The four year old twins were apprehensive at first, and when they came out to the stage they went straight to Lisa after being persuaded. Caroline has seen Lisa perform four times and believes this was truly Lisa's very best performance. Lisa, and her band rock so hard!!!

Sunday, September 22nd was another night history was made while Lisa was in town. Lisa and her band filmed performances inside the Jungle Room at Graceland for Yahoo Music! This was the first time Lisa has done anything such as performing at Graceland. The performances and interview with Yahoo Music will air as a webcast November 13, 2013 on RAW for Yahoo Music.

Elvis Presley Fans of Nashville wishes Lisa Marie Presley a very successful rest of the "Storm & Grace" concert tour. Keep doing your thing Lisa!

Elvis' 1968 gold Cadillac Eldorado is for sale

If you are to take a drive down the end of lonely street past the Heartbreak Hotel, you might want to do so in style. “This last year Marilyn Monroe's dress sold for $5.5 million, so to get an Elvis car for $229,000,” says Daniel Schmitt. “I think it's a bargain.” “1968 Eldorado, noted as his favorite car,” says Schmitt. “It's one he actually bought new, but also used on a regular basis.”

In '68, the same year as his comeback special, Elvis Aron Presley saw this topaz gold fire mist beauty outside a Memphis dealership and bought it on the spot.

Schmitt says the king of rock and roll's ride has just 16,000 original miles and runs perfectly, with this one minor modification.

Lisa Marie Presley Performs at Memphis' Levitt Shell September 23, 2013

This past Saturday, Lisa Marie performed for a capacity-filled audience at the historic Levitt Shell in Memphis.  She serenaded fans with songs from her latest album Storm & Grace as well as a few hits from her previous LPs Now What and To Whom It May Concern.  During the show fans were treated to some very intimate moments including an exclusive performance of her latest single "Sticks & Stones."

In true Presley fashion, Lisa Marie rocked the night away in her debut at the Levitt Shell - the very same venue where her father first headlined in 1954.  Evidence of Lisa's musical heritage filled the outdoor performance pavilion as she gave a show-stopping performance of "Lights Out" and her new, swampy-style version of "Idiot" written alongside her husband, Michael Lockwood.

It was an incredible night for both the audience and Lisa.  Throughout the concert, Lisa recounted memories of family and growing up in Memphis.  She also took some time between songs to invite her Mom, Priscilla Presley, to join her on stage and later in the evening Lisa took a moment to introduce her twin girls, Finley and Harper.

After the concert, Lisa went straight to Graceland to host her VIP Meet and Greet to benefit World Vision.

Rhodes' Meeman Center offers course on 'Elvis Presley and America'
  • By John Rone, Special to My Life
  • Posted September 18, 2013 at 3 a.m.

Beginning Tuesday, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and continuing each Tuesday through Oct. 22, the Meeman Center for Lifelong Learning at Rhodes College will offer a class on music icon Elvis Presley. “Elvis Presley and America,” will be taught by Dr. Charles Hughes of Rhodes’ Department of History.

The course will examine Presley’s life and career and explore what they tell about the broader history of the United States in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Few figures in U.S. history have been as compelling and controversial as Presley. Even 35 years after his death, fans still purchase his recordings and come to Memphis to visit Graceland, Sun Studios and other landmarks. At the same time, from the pages of scholarship to the stages of American Idol, his legacy remains a potent subject of discussion and debate.

Tuition for the class is $150. To enroll, call the Meeman Center at 901-843-3965.

John Rone is director of the Meeman College for Lifelong Learning at Rhodes College.

Last week it was announced about Michael Shannon playing Elvis Presley in "Elvis and Nixon." Shannon can do anything, he’ll be a great Elvis circa 1971. Now I’m told that the movie has a director– Liza Johnson.

Liza Johnson will take on the historic meeting between Elvis and the only president who had to resign in disgrace. I am told that another great actor, Danny Huston, may be up for the Nixon role. The project, produced by Holly Wiersma and Logan Levy, sounds ever more intriguing and promising.

NEW: Mother Dolores Hart interview - from The Charlotte Observer

From kissing Elvis to serving God
By Tim Funk
Saturday, September 14, 2013

Mother Dolores Hart
Age: 74
Hometown: Chicago. She was born Dolores Hicks.
Religion: Roman Catholic since age 10. At 24, she became a nun.

Title: "Prioress of the Abbey of Regina Laudis", a Benedictine monastery in Bethlehem, Conn. At the abbey, she has done much of the woodworking and, with her friend, the late actress Patricia Neal, founded an open-air theater.

Previous career: Actress

Films: She starred in 10 movies, starting with “Loving You” (1957), opposite Elvis Presley, and ending with “Come Fly with Me” (1963). Her filmography also includes “Where the Boys Are” (1960); “Wild is the Wind” (1957), with Anthony Quinn; “Francis of Assisi” (1961), as Saint Clare of Assisi; and “King Creole” (1958), also starring Elvis. On Broadway, she received a Tony nomination for her performance in “The Pleasure of His Company.”

Favorite part: The title role in “Lisa” (1962), about a Jewish woman tortured in a Nazi concentration camp.

Excerpt: In her new autobiography, “The Ear of the Heart: An Actress’ Journey from Hollywood to Holy Vows,” Hart writes this about her decision to leave behind Hollywood fame and enter the monastery:

“I had not chosen to escape my responsibilities in life by secluding myself from reality. I believed that if there is to be an ultimate and real salvation for the whole of mankind, it must begin by very personal involvement. … I did not fear the completely different life I was heading into, nor did I feel a sense of loss for the life I was leaving. I felt quite excited, in fact, not unlike what I felt on opening night of a play. It was a time full of love. As I understand it now, where there is a true sign of the Spirit, there is peace and joy.”

In her first film, which hit theaters in 1957, Dolores Hart gave Elvis Presley his first on-screen kiss.

Before long, the beautiful actress with the all-American looks was appearing opposite Hollywood heavyweights such as Anthony Quinn and Montgomery Clift. “The new Grace Kelly,” they called her.

On Broadway, she got nominated for a Tony. Off stage, she got engaged. Then, in 1963, Hart, just 24, gave it all up. She felt that God was calling her to become a nun.

On Saturday, Mother Dolores Hart, now 74 and prioress at a Benedictine monastery in Connecticut, was in Charlotte to talk about her remarkable life – recounted in detail in her new memoir, “The Ear of the Heart: An Actress’ Journey from Hollywood to Holy Vows.”

She spoke and signed books at the Diocese of Charlotte’s ninth annual Eucharistic Congress, which began Saturday morning with a procession in uptown Charlotte that included singing and prayers.

Before the book signing, Hart, wearing a suave beret atop her traditional habit, answered questions from the Observer about everything from Elvis – she co-starred with him in “Loving You” (1957) and “King Creole” (1958) – to the reasons why, as an Oscar-nominated documentary about her put it, “God Is the Bigger Elvis” in her life.

Hart is the only nun who’s a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences. And though a painful neurological disease, peripheral neuropathy, meant that she arrived at the Saturday interview in a wheelchair, the charisma that made her a star was still evident as she spoke about kissing Elvis, getting a glimpse of his spiritual side and finding lasting peace and joy as a member of the community at the Abbey of Regina Laudis.

‘I really live here’

In 1960, in “Francis of Assisi,” she played St. Clare of Assisi, the Italian woman who was inspired by Francis to become a nun. Filming in Rome, Hart got an audience with then-Pope John XXIII, who seemed to see – before Hart did – that she would follow in the footsteps of Clare.

“My name is Dolores Hart,” she told the pontiff.

“No, no,” he told her, “you are Chiara” – Italian for Clare.

But Hart said it was a 1962 film, “Lisa,” that got her thinking seriously of leaving Hollywood for the monastery. She had visited the abbey over the years, to get away from the pressures of life and career.

“I had a response to that place,” she told the Observer. “It was a feeling like ‘I really live here. I want to live here,’ ” she said.

Then came “Lisa,” in which she played a Jewish woman tortured in a Nazi concentration camp. In talking to a real Holocaust survivor and in pondering her own life, Hart began to hear a call from God.

“I think it was in that movie that I really began to question the meaning of redemption and the fact that one’s life could be a redemptive life,” she said. “And I began asking myself, ‘How am I living a life that’s worthy of redeeming anything other than satisfying myself?’ ”

Hart on Elvis and the Oscars

• Meeting Elvis: “I didn’t know who he was. When I was introduced to him, it was the most embarrassing thing. He came over and said, ‘Miss Dolores, my name is Elvis Presley.’ And I took his hand and said, ‘Oh, what do you do?’ Oy vey.”

• Their kiss: “I tried to approach it with an openness, to say let’s make this something real and honest to the characters so that (viewers) would believe there was a genuine relationship between these people. As you probably saw in the film, it lasted about four seconds. But the buildup on it was demanding…. I think, for me, the realization of kissing him – it was like kissing a new world that was opening to me. Because I knew by that time that (producer) Mr. (Hal) Wallis had offered me a seven-year contract and I knew from what went on in the newspapers that my life was going to take a tremendous change. So kissing Elvis was like kissing hello to a new world and a career.”

• Elvis’ acting ambitions: “He told me one time that he really wanted to be the next James Dean. He wanted parts that would really help him as a good actor. But he didn’t get those parts. His manager (Col. Tom Parker) – all he wanted was ‘Girls! Girls! Girls!’ ”

• Elvis’ spiritual side: “In ‘King Creole,’ we couldn’t walk on the street because of all the kids. So they had to put planks from building to building for us to go anywhere. In between shots, we were to wait in one of the hotel rooms. I can recall him picking up the Gideon Bible and just opening it at random, reading something from it and then saying ‘This is what this means to me.’ Or asking me, ‘Miss Dolores, would you open it and see what you think?’ At first, I wondered if he was playing games. But that happened more than once, and it happened in a way that I felt there was a young man in search of understanding something.”

• The No. 1 question she got after entering the monastery: “Did you get a lock of (Elvis’) hair?” (She did not.)

• Her advice to young people who want fame and celebrity – things she gave away: “Fame or the drive for that essentially can be (interpreted) as a drive for your own identity, a drive to find our own domain – who you are as an individual. And with the young members coming into the (abbey), I try to say, ‘How do you find out why you think you were created? And what can you bring to your life that’s different from anyone else? So that (drive for) fame isn’t just an empty tool, but it really becomes the medium for disclosure of the uniqueness of your own person.”

• Why she still wears the traditional nun’s habit: “We retain the habit because, as Benedictines, one of our vows is stability.…I’m more comfortable than when I take it off.”

• Voting for the Academy Awards: “In my 25th anniversary of vows (in 1988), Karl Malden, the president of the academy called me and said, ‘You’ve been a holding member. Can’t you become active now? I mean, really, don’t they trust you after 25 years? So I asked the abbess, and she said, ‘Absolutely, Mother, you can vote. So I said to Karl, ‘I don’t know how to get the films. I can’t leave the abbey.’ He said, ‘Well, now they’ve got a new digital format where I can send you a machine. You put the disc in the machine, and you can see it right there in your office.’ Now I have a way to participate.”

• Her favorite Oscar contender: “The one that I really loved (last year) was ‘Les Miserables.’ (This year) I’ve been looking for something I can say yes to with that same kind of enthusiasm.”

• Hollywood’s image: “I always feel Hollywood reflects the people. People don’t reflect Hollywood. And they want to sell films to the people who want to see them. They do the films they think people want. I can’t place my blame on Hollywood. People have to ask for something more, to make demands. That’s the key.”

• The meaning behind her book title, which comes from St. Benedict: “That you listen not just casually, but you listen with your heart. You listen with your capacity to love. And if you listen with love, you’ll know what to do.”
