Documentay explores the first years of Elvis Presley's early career through the eyes of his personal secretary, Trude Forsher

Documentary explores the first years of Elvis Presley's early career through the eyes of his personal secretary, Trude Forsher

In August, 1956, Elvis Presley started shooting his first feature film, Love Me Tender. At his side was his manager, Colonel Tom Parker and his just-hired secretary, Trude Forsher.

Give Elvis for Christmas is Trude's account of how Elvis' career went from a Southern United States singing sensation to a global legend.  Over the five years that Trude worked with Elvis and the Colonel, she observed first hand the legendary moment's in the King's life. The title comes from the stamp that Colonel Parker used on all mailings leaving the office during Christmas time.

Trude Forsher with Elvis. 1956 Give Elvis for Christmas is also told through the eyes of Byron Raphael, personal assistant to both Trude, Elvis and the Colonel. The film includes music and images that have rarely -if ever-been seen. It is not only the story of Elvis' rise to fame, but of one of his most personal confidants, who escaped the ravages of WW2 to get the job a million girls dreamed of - Elvis' private secretary.

During the 1980's and 1990's, I interviewed my mom on several occasions. Each time she shared different stories about Elvis, the Colonel, the songs and the films during her years with the Presley organization.  A few years back, I began to assemble the material into a documentary.

The title comes from the stamp that Colonel Parker used on all mailings leaving the office during Christmas time. It also reflects a special period in our family life in December 1958, when Elvis and the Colonel personally helped our family during a time of crisis.

The producer with his mother and Colonel Tom Parker, 1958 I have added a number of special premiums to help raise the finishing funds for the film. For fuller descriptions of the items, please visit www.giveelvis.com.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter "Give Elvis for Christmas" is a documentary 30 years in the making. I began interviewing my mom about her Elvis years back in the early 1980's. I began to acquire footage and develop the storyline back in the early 2000's. It has been a slow process but we are finally at the finish line.

What is needed to finish the project are funds for licensing footage, shooting some contemporary material appropriate to the story and spending a lot of time in the edit bay. The goal is to create a film that is both entertaining and tells a story never before heard about the early years of the Elvis legend.

Purchase the New Elvis Tee and Poster and Help Restore the USS Arizona Memorial
March 29, 2013

Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc., Pacific Historic Parks and the National Park Service are teaming up again to help raise funding for the restoration of the USS Arizona Memorial. Elvis fans can now purchase the new Elvis t-shirt (available in men and women styles, just $19.95) and poster (just $15) by visiting PacificHistoricParks.org or by calling toll free at 1-888-485-1941. All proceeds will go towards education and restoration of the Memorial. (See pictures above).

Elvis has been a long-time advocate for the Memorial. Dedicated on Memorial Day 1962, the structure is one of the world's foremost architectural icons of remembrance and one that had special significance for Elvis. On March 25, 1961, at Pearl Harbor’s Bloch Arena, Presley performed a historic benefit concert that raised over $64,000 for the building of the Memorial.

Over the years, due to the natural exposure to weather, salt water spray and foot traffic of more than 50 million visitors, the Memorial is in need of an extensive restoration. The restoration project was designated as the spotlight non-profit for the Elvis Presley Fan Club President’s Event in Memphis during Elvis Week 2012. Fans also enjoyed special events and Elvis exhibits at the USS Arizona Memorial during the 40th Anniversary of “Aloha from Hawaii.”

Help restore the USS Arizona Memorial today by purchasing your own Elvis tee and poster at www.PacificHistoricParks.org.

Gordon Stoker Biography via The Country Music Hall of Fame

3/27/2013

Gordon Stoker of The Jordanaires
(August 3, 1924 - March 27, 2013)

Gordon Stoker, tenor singer for Country Music Hall of Fame vocal group the Jordanaires, died Wednesday morning, March 27, 2013, at Alive Hospice in Nashville. He was 88. Born August 3, 1924, Stoker was a native of Gleason, Tennessee, where he grew up in a musical family. By age eight he was playing piano in church, and he soon played at singing conventions in western Tennessee and Kentucky. At one, he impressed John Daniel of the professional John Daniel Quartet, who invited Stoker to become the quartet's pianist when he finished high school.

Before joining Daniel's group, Stoker performed on radio in Jackson, Tennessee, as a member of the Clement Trio, and backed a gospel quartet on a radio station in Paducah, Kentucky. When he graduated from high school, at age 15, he moved to Nashville to join the Daniel Quartet, performing on radio station WSM.

A stint in the Air Force beginning in 1943 interrupted his tenure with Daniel. Upon leaving the service, Stoker enrolled
at Oklahoma Baptist University before returning to Nashville and the Daniel Quartet.

Organized in the late 1940s, the Jordanaires became a leading gospel quartet before serving as key contributors to the Nashville Sound. The group was formed in Springfield, Missouri, by two evangelists, Bill Matthews and his brother Monty. Bass singer Culley Holt and baritone Bob Hubbard rounded out the original quartet, while Bob Money served early on as pianist.

Stoker replaced Money in 1949, by which time the group had moved to Nashville to back Grand Ole Opry headliner Red Foley. Before long Stoker began singing lead and tenor, and after the Matthews brothers returned to Missouri early in the 1950s, the group reorganized. Stoker stayed on, mostly handling tenor duties, while second tenor Neal Matthews Jr. (no relation to Bill and Monty), baritone Hoyt Hawkins, and bass Hugh Jarrett came on board by 1955. Ray Walker replaced Jarrett in 1958, completing the Stoker-Matthews-Hawkins-Walker combination that would anchor the group for more than two decades and would be the lineup elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame.

By 1950 the Jordanaires were becoming noted for their spirited renditions of songs associated with both the black and white gospel traditions. They continued to mine this musical vein after signing with Capitol in 1951. In addition, the group had begun singing background on records by country hitmakers such as Foley ("Just a Closer Walk with Thee"). Their regular spots on the NBC network portion of the Grand Ole Opry and on 1955's Eddy Arnold Time, a popular syndicated TV show of the day, brought the famed quartet into households across the nation.

Although the Jordanaires' gospel albums would help them win election to the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2001, the group is best known for the signature background harmonies they have provided for dozens of other stars. Stoker recorded with Elvis Presley beginning in 1956, on Presley's first sessions for RCA Victor, and from 1958 into the early 1970s the foursome regularly backed him in the studio and in films. Early Presley hits such as "Don't Be Cruel," "Are You Lonesome Tonight," and "It's Now or Never" captured the group's special sound and led to recording work for them with other rock & rollers, including Ricky Nelson and Gene Vincent.

During the 1960s and beyond, the Jordanaires often worked as many as four sessions a day. Recordings they made with Ferlin Husky ("Gone," widely regarded as the first hit recording to embody the Nashville Sound), Jim Reeves ("Four Walls"), and Patsy Cline ("Crazy") best exemplified the smooth, pop-influenced side of Nashville's multi-faceted recording scene, while the sounds they added to hits including Don Gibson's "Oh Lonesome Me," Johnny Horton's "The Battle of New Orleans," Tammy Wynette's "Stand by Your Man," Conway Twitty's "Hello Darlin'," Kenny Rogers's "Lucille," and George Jones's "He Stopped Loving Her Today" proved the quartet's versatility. The group also backed pop acts such as Connie Francis, Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme, and Julie Andrews. The Jordanaires have been heard on Grammy-winning recordings, as well as on national television and radio ads.

The Jordanaires' contributions to the Nashville recording industry include the system of studio music notation first popularized by Neal Matthews Jr. and known internationally as the Nashville Number System. Advocates for broadcasting and film performers, the Jordanaires were also instrumental in establishing the Nashville offices of national performers' unions representing radio and television artists and screen actors. After Hawkins died in 1982, Duane West joined the Jordanaires, but due to illness he left the group and was replaced in 2000 by Louis Nunley. Curtis Young joined in 2000 following Matthews's death.

In 2001 the Jordanaires were elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2002, in conjunction with Larry Ford & the Light Crust Doughboys, they won a Grammy in the category of Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Album, for We Called Him Mr. Gospel Music: The James Blackwood Tribute Album. Frequent headliners in Las Vegas, they made personal appearances worldwide, carrying country music around the globe.

NEW Elvis Book "The Seeker King" A Spiritual Biography of Elvis - Gary Tillery

NEW Elvis Book "The Seeker King" A Spiritual Biography of Elvis - Gary Tillery

Elvis Presley's spiritual life and colossal quest for religion has been documented in numerous books and also in a few documentaries. During the late 1960's until his passing on August 16th 1977, Elvis Presley was on a spiritual quest. Elvis studied the Bible and practically every other religion in the Universe. He read thousands of spiritual books and had a spiritual adviser in his hairstylist and friend Larry Geller. Elvis even wore a Cross necklace  and the Jewish Star pendent for protection. Now Elvis fans and curiosity seekers will soon have a brand new book regarding Elvis' spiritual life.

The new book of 216 pages is titled, "The Seeker King: A Spiritual Biography of Elvis Presley" and is authored by Gary Tillery. The release date is October 15, 2013.

From the official press release:

"A woman in the audience once handed Elvis a crown saying, “You’re the King.” “No, honey,” Elvis replied. “There is only one king — Jesus Christ. I’m just a singer.”

"Gary Tillery presents a coherent view of Elvis’s thoughts through such anecdotes and other recorded facts. We learn, for instance, that Elvis read thousands of books on religion; that his crisis over making bimbo movies like Girl Happy led him to writers such as Gurdjieff, Krishnamurti, and Helena Blavatsky; and that, while driving in Arizona, an epiphany he had inspired him to learn Hindu practice.  Elvis came to believe that the Christ shines in everyone and that God wanted him to use his light to uplift people. And so he did. Elvis’s excesses were as legendary as his generosity, yet, despite his lethal reliance on drugs, he remained ever spiritually curious. When he died, he was reading A Scientific Search for the Face of Jesus."

"This intimate, objective portrait inspires new admiration for the flawed but exceptional man who said, “All I want is to know and experience God. I’m a searcher, that’s what I’m all about."

Memphis, TN named #12 out of 15 Emerging Downtown Cities by Forbes

March 26, 2013

Forbes has named Memphis, TN #12 out of their list of 15 Emerging Downtown Cities!

Home to Beale Street, downtown Memphis has welcomed a flurry of redevelopment projects over the past few decades. In December, a 200-page, 20-year-long plan was proposed to continue efforts. The Pyramid Arena is currently being redeveloped as a massive mixed-use site by Bass Pro Shops that will tout an aquarium, bowling alleys, retail, and a hotel. The city is also carving out bike and walkway paths in the area, thanks in part to a $15 million federal grant. Plans to restore and convert the historic Chisca Hotel into market-rate residential housing kicked off in 2012. Apartments in downtown were 93% occupied as of the end of 2012 with hundreds more units in the construction pipeline, according to the Downtown Memphis Commission. The population rose 7% from 2000 to 2010, according to the commission, much of that increase attributed to young professionals.

Elvis Presley's first hit goes under the hammer for $88,000

March 25, 2013

An original version of Elvis Presley's first ever radio hit, "That's All Right" has sold at auction for $88,000.

The 78rpm was recorded on July 5, 1954, by a young and unknown Presley, who had walked into the offices of Sun Records and the Memphis Recording Service in Memphis, Tennessee, owned by Sam Phillips. It is the only known surviving promotional copy of his first commercial recording and is considered to be one of the most important foundation stones of rock and roll. He sang a fast version of That's All Right (Mama) by Arthur Crudup which Philips recorded on an acetate record and sent to a local radio station disc jockey, who agreed to play it.

The acetate record of The King's 1954 track went under the hammer at Whyte's auctioneers in Dublin, Ireland, on Sunday, alongside Buddy Holly, Van Morrison and U2 memorabilia.

Whyte said it was the first time Presley had hit the airwaves and the station was inundated with phone calls and reportedly had to play it over 14 times during the course of the show.

The record sold to an Internet bidder for a staggering $88,000.

Other Elvis highlights in the sale included a watch gifted by Elvis to his manager, one of his famous Taking Care of Business pendants and autographs.

Auction house boss Ian Whyte says, "I am delighted the sale went extremely well. There was huge interest. It is the first ever pop and rock sale in Ireland, and I hope it won't be the last."

New Kelly Clarkson Song Mentions Elvis Presley

Entertainer Kelly Clarkson has released a brand new song and the song mentions Elvis Presley!

The song is titled: "Ain't Gonna Like This" which Clarkson premiered on Thursday, February 28th at the annual Sony Music Nashville Dinner Cruise which was held aboard the General Jackson Showboat.

The new song, which Clarkson co-wrote with her guitarist Aben Eubanks, is a soulful rock ballad which showcases Clarkson's versatility from the wide range of musical influences she has had over her decade-long career. According to the 30-year-old singer, the new tune is her declaration that she's constantly going to pursue all the different music genres that she loves, no matter who "ain't gonna like this."

The composition is quite straightforward and direct in its message. "So what if I like some country/ Whether it's music or the men/ So what if I like the mood/ That country puts me in/ If you don't like Johnny, and if you don't like Elvis/ You ain't gonna like this..."
