Miranda Kerr to release Elvis Presley cover

2/27/2014

Picture
Miranda Kerr is planning to release an Elvis Presley cover.

Miranda Kerr models, she's a mom, she travels the world—is there anything Miranda Kerr can't do?

To drive the point home, the Victoria's Secret supermodel has just recorded a song—like, a real, proper cover of Elvis Presley's "You're the Boss"—with Jersey Boy Bobby Fox.

The 30-year-old model has teamed up with Jersey Boys' Bobby Fox and recorded their version of the late singer's 'You're the Boss', which featured in the 1964 movie 'Viva Las Vegas'.

However, the brunette beauty - who also wants to try her hand at acting - insists she's not planning a career change and only set up the collaboration for ''a bit of fun''.

'You're The Boss' is set to be released on iTunes on March 14.

Is Miley Cyrus comparable to Elvis Presley?

2/27/2014

Picture

Priscilla Presley, the ex-wife of the legendary, Elvis Presley thinks the 'Wrecking Ball' hitmaker is ''very talented'' and doesn't see anything wrong with her infamous 'twerking' dance moves.  As, Elvis Presley the 'Jailhouse Rock' star was slammed for his suggestive hip movements, which were seen as vulgar in the 1950s.

Priscilla told 'Entertainment Tonight': ''I think she's very talented. I really can't criticise, because Elvis went through the same thing.''

However, Priscilla thinks Miley - who has been criticised for her stage antics,  during her 'Bangerz' tour - and other young stars take raunchy performances to an ''extreme'' and she doesn't understand the former Disney star's outrageous behavior.

She continued: ''It's taken to extreme [today]. I don't know what to think of her, I really don't. I think maybe Miley feels she has to express herself and this is what she needs right now.''

She said Elvis, who died in 1977, had ''sex appeal'' when he was younger, but he was bothered by the reaction to his dance movements, which were inspired by listening to gospel music.

Priscilla, 68, explained: ''He got reprimanded really by not only the public but a lot of people from high places, who were like, 'Gosh, who's this on the scene, it's vulgar'.''

  • Posted February 26, 2014

A $2.5 million renovation of the old Lansky Brothersclothing store at 126 Beale has begun for Hard Rock Cafe Memphis.

Crews from W.G. Yates & Sons Construction Co. are working on the building, which previously housed Elvis Presley’s Memphis restaurant and club.

A building permit listed Hard Rock Cafe International as tenant and Belz Enterprises as owner. Belz represents the Lansky family. Hnedak Bobo Group is project architect.

Hard Rock International has not yet officially announced the relocation from its original Memphis location at 315 Beale Street, where it opened in 1997. A news conference was scheduled at the Lansky site, then postponed.

The Lansky building redevelopment is believed to be a multi-tenant project that also includes a Memphis music museum.

"60 years of Rock 'n' Roll" Exhibit Opens at Graceland

Graceland exhibit gives glimpse into young Elvis
By ADRIAN SAINZ
February 24, 2014 4:04 PM

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The telegram sent by Elvis Presley to his parents in November 1954 gives a glimpse into the young singer's priorities and his optimism, as he begins what will become a career as a rock 'n' roll icon and cultural phenomenon.

"Hi babies," says the telegram, sent from Houston by Presley to his parents, Vernon and Gladys, who were in Memphis. "Here's the money to pay the bills. Don't tell no one how much I sent. Will send more next week. There is a card in the mail. Love, Elvis."

The note is being displayed in an exhibit at Graceland, Presley's longtime Memphis home that today serves as a museum and tourist attraction. The exhibit, which opened Monday, commemorates the 60 years since Presley cut his first record, "That's All Right," at Sun Studio in July 1954. It was played on the radio days later, and many believe its release marked the birth of mainstream rock 'n' roll.

There are other theories about the creation of rock 'n' roll, which was born from a truly American mixture of styles such as country, blues, jazz and gospel. But in the eyes of Priscilla Presley — Elvis Presley's former wife — it was a defining moment in Elvis' life, when as a shy 19-year-old he walked into the studio run by visionary producer Sam Phillips and sang the lyrics, "Well, that's all right mama, that's all right for you."

"It had to be on his mind for a long time to get up the nerve to go in that place and want to meet Sam Phillips to record a song for his mother," Priscilla Presley told The Associated Press in an interview at Graceland on Friday.

"That's not something that he would have just thought about doing at the spur of the moment," she added. "I think it took him some courage to do that."

The house opened as a museum in June 1982, and a complex built across the street houses permanent exhibits, two airplanes owned by Presley, gift shops and restaurants. The tourist attraction draws more than 500,000 visitors each year.

The temporary exhibit is in a room next to the house called the "annex." Visitors with a VIP ticket (about $70) can walk the entire exhibit in about 15 to 20 minutes. It details the trajectory of Presley's career through his hit songs, such as "Heartbreak Hotel," ''Jailhouse Rock" and "Suspicious Minds."

It's also the first new exhibit since Authentic Brands Group bought Elvis Presley's intellectual property from CORE Media Group in November.

Authentic Brands also is partnering with the founder of another company to operate the tourist attraction across the street from the home. Elvis and Priscilla Presley's daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, still owns the Graceland home and the original items inside it.

Along with the telling telegram, the "60 Years of Elvis" exhibit features jumpsuits worn on tour by Presley and an organ he would play in his California home. There's Presley's copy of the original "That's All Right" record — with "Blue Moon of Kentucky" on the other side — and the original contract Presley inked with RCA in November 1955 for a $5,000 signing bonus.

Priscilla Presley said her husband talked about befriending Phillips' secretary Marion Keisker, who is said to have recognized his talent and facilitated the first "That's All Right" recording.

"The timing was right ... under her guidance, it worked out," Priscilla Presley said. "He was nervous that day, as much as he was the day they first played his song on the radio."

Elvis also was nervous about how listeners would react to the song, which was played by influential disc jockey Dewey Phillips on his "Red, Hot and Blue" radio show on WHBQ a few days after it was recorded.

"Elvis was really shy by nature — I don't know if you all know that or not, but I do for sure," Priscilla Presley said.

Despite the flashy garments, confident onstage persona and sex appeal, Elvis was not one to boast about money. She said the phrase in the telegram asking his parents not to divulge the amount he sent is proof.

To this day, it remains unclear how much he actually wired.

"Enough to pay the bills, let's just put it that way," says Priscilla Presley, laughing.

Priscilla Presley Visits Elvis Presley's Birthplace

2/26/2014

Picture
Priscilla Presley, made her first visit to Elvis Presley's Birthplace since the early 1970s.

She was given the keys to the city Saturday, and said she was taken aback the first time Presley showed her his childhood home.

"There were no additions when I was here last, there was just the little house he was born in," she said. "Coming here for the first time I was so shocked to see the place. Two rooms! I don't know how they lived — and with his grandmother and father and, of course, Gladys."

Dick Guyton, director of the birthplace, said Presley took time to read
the description of every item in the museum.

"He told me of his humble beginnings: the home he was born in, the Assembly of God church that he went to," she told the small crowd. "I got to learn a lot about him there because it was a delicate time for him. He never forgot Tupelo, Mississippi. He never forgot where he was raised."

She said she's proud of what Tupelo has done to preserve his early life and will send as much tourism there as she can.

Picture
Before the tour, Mayor Jason Shelton, with the aid of Elvis' second cousin Brandon Presley, gave Priscilla Presley the key to the city and read a proclamation naming her an honorary citizen of Tupelo.

Picture
"I was absolutely star-stuck," Shelton said. "To be able to present Ms. Priscilla Presley with a key to the city and make her an honorary citizen is certainly a highlight of my administration."

Guyton showed Priscilla the mold of a statue of Elvis as a child, with guitar, that will be placed on the ridge along with another larger-than-life statue and a new pavilion.

"We plan to have it finished in time for the 80th birthday" next year, Guyton said. "We would like to invite you to be our guest at the 80th birthday party."

Elvis Presley USA Postage Stamp to be Reissued

2/26/2014

Picture
The United States Elvis Presley postage stamp is to be reissued. Sometimes, when things leak out from the U.S. government, the news isn't good. In the case of the recent leak of future postage stamps, the result is a celebration of the music icons who will be saluted in the coming years.

The Washington Post linked to a document that they received that includes the current plans from the "Citizen's Stamp Advisory Committee." On that list are numerous upcoming commemorative stamps saluting music icons from pop, rock, R&B and country.

There is a bit of confusion over the status of an upcoming Elvis Presley release. According to the article in the Post, the post office will be reissuing the Presley stamp from 1993 which is the best selling stamp in the country's history; however, the leaked list shows it as a new issue and not in the reprint column. We'll have to wait until next year to see whether we get 50's Elvis, 70's Elvis or something in-between.

February 24, 2014

On July 5, 1954, a delivery truck driver named Elvis Presley walked into Sun Studio in Memphis and recorded “That’s All Right” with guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black. Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips played the song on July 8 on WHBQ radio and the switchboard lit up. Rock ‘n’ roll was born and the music world changed forever.

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of Elvis' first recordings at Sun Studio, Elvis Presley’s Graceland is planning a variety of activities, starting with a new exhibit at Graceland entitled “60 Years of Elvis.” Save over $120 and plan your trip by visiting Elvis.com/60YearsPackage.

This exciting, new exhibit is now open as part of the VIP tour experience. Elvis Presley's American Eagle Cape Up for Auction

Elvis Presley's American Eagle Cape Up for Auction

Music News Deask
February 19th

Elvis Presley's American Eagle concert cape, custom made for the 1973 Aloha from Hawaii satellite performance will be auctioned next month by New Hampshire based, RR Auction.

The one-of-a-kind full-length cape, designed by Bill Belew, measures almost five feet long, is heavily inlaid with semi-precious stones on the reverse in a grand and colorful American eagle surrounded by stars, and weighs in at an impressive 12 pounds.

Presley had wanted a full-length cape to hide behind at the opening of the show, intending to drop the cape and reveal himself to the anxiously awaiting crowd.

He worked closely with Belew on the design of the eagle, wanting to express his patriotism for his country. However, when Presley tried on the cape during rehearsals, the weight almost pulled him over backwards, and it was decided that a smaller version was needed. Belew had less than 24 hours to create the replacement, and this cape was sent back to Graceland where it remained until a charity auction in 1999.

"One of the ultimate Presley collectibles, this was the original design for one of his most significant live performances ever," says Bobby Livingston, VP at RR Auction.

The concert was broadcast live via satellite on January 14, 1973, and took place in what is known today as the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena. It was the most watched broadcast by an individual entertainer in television history, and aired via Globecam Satellite in over 40 countries across Asia, Australia, the Far East, Europe, and South America (some receiving the telecast the next day, also in primetime) even parts of Communist China supposedly tuned in. Viewing figures have been estimated at over 1 billion viewers worldwide and the show was the most expensive entertainment special at the time, costing $2.5 million.

The Marvels of Modern Music auction, from New Hampshire based RR Auction will feature more than 800 items. The auction is set to begin on Thursday, March 13, and end on the evening of Thursday, March 20. More details can be found online at www.rrauction.com.

Elvis Presley Autographed Candid Photos - eBay

2/17/2014

Picture
Three lovely photos of Elvis Presley, plus Elvis' autograph are for sale on eBay for the price of US$3,500.

John Black had just purchased the newest Polaroid Land Camera in New York City and boarded his flight to California. Aboard the plane he looked up and saw Colonel Tom Parker and Elvis Presley. He quickly snapped a picture that came out overexposed because the camera setting wasn't correct. This picture is included in the lot. He asked Elvis to sit on the vacant seat beside him and spent the flight talking with Elvis. Another two photos were shot and came out great. One is an incredible photo of Elvis looking right at the camera. One was autographed on the back. Col Parker asked for the photos but Elvis insisted Mr Black could keep his photos.

Actually one has fingerprints (Elvis's?) where both handled the photo when the sealant was still wet.

Included is a typed letter of the story and a JSA notarized letter confirming the authenticity.

Martina McBride Covers Elvis Presley’s 'Suspicious Minds'

2/14/2014

By Annie Reuter
February 13, 2014

Martina McBride has released one of the tracks on her forthcoming album, Everlasting. She puts her soulful spin on Elvis Presley‘s monster 1969 hit “Suspicious Minds."

In an interview with USA Today, McBride explained why she decided to record the track.

“There aren't very many female versions of that song, and It makes sense for a woman to sing it. I focused on the lyrics on this record. This one is about reacting to jealousy and being possessive. Which women can really relate to.” McBride said.

It turns out Martina McBride and Elvis Presley have something else in common with the song: the guitar player. Guitarist Reggie Young played on both Presley’s original and McBride’s recent recording of “Suspicious Minds.”

“We really wanted him on that song,” McBride said. “Don, McBride's husband goes, ‘What do you want to play?’ Reggie says, ‘I can play this or I can play that. Or I can just play what I played on the Elvis record. I was, like, ‘Hold up! Take a moment! You don’t hear that every day.’ It was so cool. So at the very end of the song, he’s doing the Elvis lick.

McBride’s Everlasting will be released via her own Vinyl Recordings label on April 8th, 2014.

While searching the auction website eBay for Presley memorabilia, Andreas Jensen came across a Hudson, Massachusetts Police hat badge that had been given to Presley, a collector of police badges, in the early 1970s and was displayed for a time at the Elvis Presley Museum in Branson, Miss.

"It was pretty common for people to give him badges," Jensen said from his Bodoe, Norway, home this week. "I’m pretty sure he got a badge from every city in the 1970s. I know this was originally displayed at the Elvis Presley Museum.

"Before he bought the badge - which includes the number 15 on it - Jensen sent a photo of it to Hudson Police officials, who determined the badge was authentic.

"We believe it is," said Police Chief David Stephens, who is unsure who originally wore the badge.

Jensen placed the winning bid for the badge last summer and is now trying to find the original owner of the badge to hear the story of how Presley received the it - and to see if the original owner has a photo of "The King" holding the badge."

A reward will be given if I find a photo of (Presley) holding the badge," said Jensen. "I want to know the story of how (he) got the badge."

Besides a photo of Presley holding the Hudson Police hat badge, the item Jensen would most like to add to his collection is a pair of "The King’s" sunglasses. Jensen said Presley only wore 10 or 12 pairs of sunglasses throughout his career.

While noting that it may be difficult to find who gave Presley the badge, Jensen said it's worth the hunt."I know it’s a long shot, but I’m giving it a try," said Jensen.

The Honolulu investment group that has plans to restore the iconic Coco Palms Resort on Kauai to its original glory plans to select a “nationwide” hotel operator in two weeks, and start demolition and construction on the site as early as the third quarter of this year, the investors told PBN.

Coco Palms Hui, which is led by investors Chad Waters and Tyler Greene, gave a general update on the project to the Kapaa Business Association on Thursday.

Just a couple of months ago, the project received a big push when the Kauai County Council gave the developers two more years of planning and permitting time to rebuild the East Kauai resort, which was featured in the Elvis Presley movie, “Blue Hawaii” but suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Iniki in 1992.

The extended period was given due to the council’s vote to defer a repeal of the “Iniki ordinance,” which gives the developers more time to work on the project.

The plan is rebuild the resort with up to 390 units with a target date to reopen in late 2015 or early 2016.
