A new calendar called the Memphis Calendar is joining the celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Birth of Rock 'N Roll music in Memphis.

The Memphis Calendar will include a backstage photo of Elvis Presley.  This photo will be at the top of the January page of our calendar.  We selected it because it was taken right after he 'stole the show' at the Levitt Shell 60 years ago.  The Night Rock 'N Roll was born!  It is only fitting that it would begin this celebration year.

A candlelight photo of the Birthday celebration this year will be at the top of our August page to pay tribute to the Candlelight Vigil this year. If you like Memphis music you will enjoy the other months too with the Guitar Drop at the Hard Rock Cafe on Beale Street on New Years Eve on the Cover, BarKays, Rufus Thomas, Jerry Lee Lewis, STAX, Rock 'N Roll Museum, Levitt Shell and other photos as Headliners.

Peter Guralnick has confirmed NEW Elvis Presley Film

1/24/2014

Picture
Elvis Information Network's LA roving reporter Joan Gansky was at the recent Grammy Museum lecture with Peter Guralnick.

She reports that Guralnick was an excellent speaker. Peter Guralnick is so down to earth, and he is so passionate and knowledgeable on his subject:  MUSIC!

It was interesting that when Peter took questions from the audience, they all seemed to be about Elvis!

He mentioned he was working on a new book about Sam Phillips, due for release next year.

Afterwards Joan asked him what was happening about the rumored movie of his Last Train to Memphis book. Guralnick smiled and assured me that everything was on schedule and moving right along! Lisa Marie has also noted before that the new movie was in pre-production.

The director is Kevin MacDonald who also directed The Last King of Scotland andTouching the Void.

Court has made final decision on the TCB Bus

1/24/2014

Picture
The TCB Tour Bus court decision is FINAL!

JD Sumner's tour bus will reside and rest where it has been for several years. The state Court of Appeals has upheld a ruling that Tupelo businessman Bill Kinard was competent when he agreed in 2011 to sell a tour bus at auction. For the past three years, Kinard and Larry Michael of Nashville have disputed debts associated with retrieval of the bus from Washington State in early 2009 and some $134,000 in costs connected with that trip and the vehicle's partial "restoration."

Ultimately, Lee County Chancellor Talmadge Littlejohn ordered the bus put up for sale and Michael won the bid. Throughout, Kinard — who sued as Legacy Hall of Fame Inc., a celebrity memorabilia facility — argued he never intended to sell the bus and that he was under medication when he agreed to do so. Kinard said he wanted to keep the bus and take it on tour to make a living away from his Legacy Hall of Fame museum in Tupelo.

On Dec. 12, 2011 all sides apparently agreed to a court-filed compromise to put the bus up for sale. The auction was held in March 2012 and Michael was the only bidder. Four months later, Legacy Hall sued to set-aside the agreement. Legacy Hall argued in court documents that Kinard under a doctor's care and should not have signed anything.

Littlejohn in November 2012 ruled against Legacy Hall. The Appeals Court, in its unanimous decisions Tuesday, ruled Legacy Hall failed to prove Kinard was incompetent when he signed the agreement.

The 40-foot long, eight-foot wide 1976 vehicle had Elvis Presley's trademark "TCB" logo. The initials TCB stand for Taking Care of Business, which is what Presley called his band. He incorporated the letters into an emblem flanked by lightning bolts. This emblem was used in several pieces of Elvis' custom jewelry.

Kinard eventually backed off a bit from his certainty that the King of Rock 'n' Roll actually owned the bus, saying instead that Elvis gave its purchase money to music colleague J.D. Sumner to tour with his Stamps Quartet.

Memphis in Three Days

1/22/2014

It’s your first trip to Memphis, and maybe you’re staying for a long weekend or you’ve packed the kids in the wagon and you’re headed out on vacation. While it’s nearly impossible to get your fill of the Bluff city in such a short time (lifelong residents and the I Love Memphis Blog discover something new to do every day), you can still enjoy many of Memphis’ essential attractions. Read on for a plan that will help make the most of your time - these are the sights and sounds you must experience before leaving.

Day One

Really, you could do these days in any order you’d like. We’ll start heavy with music, because much of Memphis’ history, culture and community revolves around tunes.

Today, plan to see the home of The King of Rock ’n’ Roll, the small studio that set the world on fire and fill your heart with a little Memphis soul.

Graceland
Welcome to the home of Elvis Presley. Graceland was purchased by Elvis for $102,000 in 1957 (Elvis was 22 years old). The Graceland experience takes you from Elvis' humble beginnings through his rise to superstardom. See how a rock 'n' roll legend lived and relaxed with family and friends. The full Graceland experience includes the Graceland mansion, Elvis' Automobile Museum, Elvis' custom jets and special exhibits.

Graceland offers a self-guided tour that allows visitors to go at their own pace. Depending on seasonality and your interest in Elvis, you could expect to spend 2 - 5 hours immersed in Elvis facts and memorabilia.

Sun Studio
In 1954, an unknown Elvis Presley, grabbed a mic and sang his heart out making Sun the most famous recording studio in the world. Take a guided tour through the tiny studio where you will experience outtakes from recording sessions, touch Elvis' first microphone and hear the real story of the studio that launched the careers of not only Elvis Presley, but Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, B.B. King, Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich, and many others.

Tours at Sun Studio start at the bottom of every hour and typically last about 45 minutes.

Stax Museum of American Soul Music
You know Memphis soul music when you hear it! From 1959 – 1974, this movie-theater-turned-recording-studio produced a string of hits that still reside today - we’re talking Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the M.G’s, and many more. Don’t miss this huge collection of more than 2,000 artifacts, memorabilia, galleries interactive exhibits, and – of course – Isaac Hayes' gold-plated, peacock blue 1972 Superfly Cadillac El Dorado.

Expect to spend approximately 2-3 hours at Stax.

Dinner in Overton Square
Fresh blood and a new energy has Overton Square back and better than ever. Clean your plate at fine-dining anchors like Restaurant Iris and Bari Ristorante or double dip on delicious, casual fare at Chiwawa and Local Gastropub. Knock back a local craft beer on the patio at Bosco’s and catch a flick at Studio on the Square or sip some wine at Le Chardonnay and settle in for a high-quality theatrical performance at Playhouse on the Square. There’s no shortage of deliciousness in Overton Square.

Day Two

History, culture and the sweet smell of Memphis barbecue is on today’s agenda. See how Civil Rights shaped Memphis, bask in the neon of Beale Street and see our city by land and sea.

National Civil Rights Museum
Housed in the Lorraine Motel, site of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, theNational Civil Rights Museum presents a timeline of Civil Rights struggles relating to African Americans and concentrating on the events of the 1950’s and 1960’s.

In 2014, the museum will present more modernized displays – think a “smart” table with touch panels, stunning visual programs instead of text panels and ample audio and video snippets. The National Civil Rights Museum will offer the same iconic exhibits and fixtures, but beefed up with interactive screens that offer a richer educational experience than ever before.

The self-guided tour of the National Civil Rights Museum lasts approximately 1 - 2 hours.

Barbecue
Why has it taken it this long to mention barbecue? If you haven’t already popped some pork by now, we’ve got the skinny on some of the best barbecue in Memphis.

Central BBQ tends to win quite a few local awards. You can’t go wrong with ribs or shoulders at Central. They also have a handful of other delicious options including delish wings, smoked sausage, homemade potato chips and a special 8-inch portobello that is marinated, grilled, and topped with smoked Gouda cheese (for any vegetarians in your party).

Rendezvous is TV famous and the spot you’ve most likely seen on the Travel Channel orFood Network. With its dry-rub ribs and wall-to-wall flair, Rendezvous is the essential first stop for every barbecue lover that visits Memphis. The front door of this hole in the wall is in an alley about a block away from the Peabody Hotel and AutoZone Park, home to our Triple-A Redbirds.

If your definition of good barbecue starts with sticky tables and sweet smoke bellowing out of the roof, then Cozy Corner is your place. This joint is pretty nondescript with its plain building and common furnishings but the food is anything but average.

The barbecue at Cozy Corner is cooked on a Chicago-style smoker meaning the coals are placed further from the grill. The meat is placed on the lowest rack then progresses upward until it is smoked to perfection and ready to serve. Not into ribs? Try the Cornish game hen.

Don’t rush the important stuff, take your time with barbecue.

Downtown Trolley
Once you’ve got your belly full of barbecue, hop aboard a vintage trolley car and glide through historic Downtown Memphis along the mighty Mississippi River. The clickety-clack of the track takes you past notable attractions like Beale Street, Orpheum Theatre, Downtown hotels and the authentic Arcade Restaurant.

The Riverfront Loop trolley route is just $1 and takes about 45 minutes to complete.

Beale Street Landing and Mississippi Riverboat Rides
The Beale Street Landing complex at the junction of Beale Street and the river is combo riverboat dock, playground and green space – you can even trek atop its grassy roof.

Let kids climb, slide and splash in the play area complete with water features. Chaperones can chill beneath shady structures or snap pictures with the iconic bridge in the backdrop.

Memphis Riverboats are housed at Beale Street Landing and cruise nearly every day at 2:30. Find the ticket office inside Beale Street Landing’s central building and relax on a 90-minute tour full of river commentary, tidbits and fascinating facts.

Beale Street
In the core of Downtown Memphis with three blocks of clubs, live music, neon, restaurants and retail shops, the Beale Street entertainment district stirs a melting pot of delta blues, jazz, rock 'n' roll, R&B and gospel music. You won’t find another local landmark that has held such mystique, intrigue, fame and infamy over the years.

Beale Street is the most visited attraction in the State of Tennessee and in 1966, Beale Street was declared a National Historic Landmark and in 1977, Beale Street was officially declared the Home of the Blues by an act of Congress.

Regardless of the weather, Beale Street is one of the coolest places in Memphis and a must-see for any visitor.

Day Three

Did you know, Memphis has more sunny days per year than Miami? We aren’t kidding here. On day three, work off some of that barbecue by exploring Mud Island River Park, bike in Shelby Farms and see a cool shrunken head.

Mud Island River Park
In Downtown Memphis, you’ll find a 5-block long replica of the mighty Mississippi River, canoeing, kayaking pedal boats and a museum dedicated to the life and history of the river. Admission to the River Park is free, but pay $10 and get the museum and a round-trip ride on the monorail.

Pink Palace Museum
Housed in the former home of Clarence Saunders, founder of Piggly Wiggly grocery store, the Pink Palace Museum is one of the largest museums in the Mid-South. Inside you’ll find permanent natural and cultural historic exhibits like a real shrunken head and a replica of the first grocery store. Peep a larger than life movie at the IMAX theater or get lost in space at their Sharpe Planetarium.

Shelby Farms Park
Shelby Farms Park is big! We’re talking the largest urban park in the United States big. So, with all that space, there’s plenty to do. Shelby Farms has biking and hiking trails, horseback riding, fishing and plenty of space to fly kites. Something you don’t usually see either, Shelby Farms is home to a herd of American Bison.

Rent a bike and cruise the Greenline. Bring your kids. They’ll love to run, jump and play at the Woodland Discovery Playground. The park is open sunrise to sunset each day.

For more tips on what experienced travelers should do and see in Memphis, read the many features and listings on memphistravel.com.

Elvis Presley Fans of Nashville would like to wish
Elvis Presley's Road Manager and Bodyguard,
Joe Esposito a very Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday Joe!!

Joe Esposito met Elvis while serving in the military in 1958 when they were both stationed in Germany, where they quickly became lifelong friends. Joe became Elvis's Road Manager and Bodyguard beginning in 1960. Joe Esposito served as the best man at Elvis's wedding.

Tempest Storm is Writing her Autobiography and Filming a Documentary

1/15/2014

Picture
Tempest Storm the Queen of burlesque, who once dated Elvis and whose breasts are insured for $1million still loves performing at 85 and is writing her autobiography.

The pensioner, who claims to have had flings with Elvis Presley and President JFK during more than 60 years as a performer, still pulls in a huge crowd every time she performs.

Tempest, born Annie Blanche Banks, shot to fame thanks to her sizeable 44DD assets which helped her forge a successful career as a strip-tease dancer.

Tempest said: "I never went to Hollywood with dreams of taking my clothes off, but burlesque is something that just came naturally to me. You need to be sexy and tease the audience, make them believe that they are a part of your life at that time. And they are, I absolutely adore them, they're wonderful. 'I've been around more than 60 years and had the longest career of anyone in the business, it has been amazing. There's nothing I haven't done, I've been through it all. I was mixing in high circles and a lot of big names would come and watch my
shows."

I met Elvis when I was performing at The Dunes - now the Bellagio - and Elvis came back stage to have photos taken with the performer, but I was in a hurry as I had friends coming to visit from Texas. I was stood there with Elvis Presley and I just said "will this take long?" I was standing next to the King and complaining about being in a hurry. Elvis looked at me with those beautiful eyes and said "may I join you?" He was a real Southern gentleman - it was absolutely fantastic.

The Las Vegas legend is still a slave to her trade and hosts her Las Vegas Revue show, as well as writing an autobiography, filming a documentary and a recorded interview on vinyl with The White Stripes' Jack White.

Hard Rock Cafe Memphis is moving its location to former Lansky building
Posted: Jan 15, 2014
By Kontji Anthony

MEMPHIS, TN -(WMC-TV) – An official inside Memphis Mayor A C Wharton's office confirms the Hard Rock Cafe, now located on Beale Street and Rufus Thomas Boulevard, is moving two blocks north to Beale and Second Streets.

The mayor would not outright confirm that the international restaurant that boasts live music, music memorabilia, and a casual dining experience plans to move into the Lansky building at 126 Beale Street.

Beale business owners say Lansky's "Clothier to the King" brand is a perfect match for the music-themed restaurant, a move that will facilitate the city's plan to extend Beale Street to the river.

source: http://www.wmctv.com/ - WMC-TV

Elvis Presley Fans of Nashville, President Caroline Pratt would like to add the following information:
"The Hard Rock Cafe, move will be beneficial and grand! Parking will be closer and much better in the parking garage. The particular section of Beal Street and second is indeed safer. "
"The Lansky building became Lansky Brothers Clothing in the late 1940's. Elvis loved the clothing at Lansky, and Bernard Lansky became known as "The Clothier to The King." In the early 1980's Lansky Brothers Clothing moved to The Peabody Hotel. In July 1997 Elvis Presley Enterprises' opened up the Restaurant, Elvis Presley's Memphis; in the former Lansky building. Elvis Presley's Memphis Restaurant, closed in September 2003. A historical marker in front of the former Lansky Brother's was unveiled during Elvis Week 2011. Elvis fans will be very happy and pleased to once again enjoy a dinning experience in the former Lansky building."

From Wikipedia regarding Benard Lansky and Elvis Presley:
"At the start of 1952, Bernard noticed a young man who would continuously walk past his window and look inside, but never actually came inside to buy anything. Eventually, Bernard went to invite the man in. It was seventeen-year-old Elvis Presley, who worked at the local Loew's Theatre. According to Bernard, Elvis told him that he was going to buy him out when he got enough money. Lansky responded: "Elvis, don't buy me, buy from me!" Once Elvis became an international superstar, Lansky Brothers still provided much of his attire, including his outfit for his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1956. "I put Elvis in his first suit, and I put him in his last," Lansky recalls."

John Travolta to release album 'inspired by Elvis'
January 12, 2014

John Travolta is reportedly planning to release an album inspired by Elvis Presley.

The 59-year-old actor is also a keen musician with over ten records under his belt. His last was a collaboration with his Grease co-star Olivia Newton-John called This Christmas, which hit stores in 2012. It didn't set the charts alight and John is now determined to end his singing career on a high note.

He reportedly believes he could rival the likes of famed vocalist Elvis if he had the right team around him.

"He has been hitting up some of LA's best producers and songwriters for material. This is his plan to stay relevant," according to an insider.

Further details of the plan remain unknown and at the moment no release date has been mooted.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -Hundreds of fans and friends gathered Wednesday at Graceland to celebrate Elvis Presley's 79th birthday, who was born Jan. 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Miss.

Marian Cocke, Elvis' personal nurse, comes back to Graceland mansion she calls a home away from home several times a year. She remembers a man that so many admired, but a man she called a friend.

"I remember so well one night he said, 'Ms. Cocke, do you think that people will remember me?,'" Cocke said. "I said, 'Oh yeah, honey they're going to remember you.'"

And remember they did, and continue to do.

"I feel special and it's wonderful," said Caroline Pratt, Elvis fan. "It just makes me go crazy."

On this 79th birthday of Elvis hundreds of fans came to Graceland to share their stories and also have a shot at a piece of his birthday cake, made by "Cakes By Mom and Me" in West Memphis, Ark.

For filmmaker William Bryan, he says he's been coming to Graceland for 10 years, and feels a special connection.

"You really do feel this sense of community, like your home away from home," Bryan said.

Meanwhile up on stage was Canadian singer David Thibault, who you might recognize him from his You Tube video that went viral as he sang Elvis. Thibault was standing  to former President George W. Bush's daughter, Jenna Bush Hager, and sang happy birthday to The King.

Just as many people will keep this memory of Elvis' 79th birthday in their hearts.

Cocke's memories, while a little more personal, will span the rest of time.

"People always ask me what is the nicest gift Elvis ever gave you," she said. "We were sitting up in the room one night and Elvis reached over and put his hand on my knee, and he said, 'Ms. Cocke you're one of the few people I know who's never asked anything of me but friendship.' That meant more to me than any gift he ever gave me."

Presley recorded his first song, "That's All Right," at Sun Studio in 1954. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the recording and the first radio airplay of the single by disc jockey Dewey Phillips on the "Red, Hot, and Blue" show.

When The Beatles met Elvis Presley: New documentary reveals what really happened

January 8, 2014

The Beatles and Elvis Presley, arguably the most documented musical acts in history, had a rare undocumented night when they met each other face to face for the one and only time. Since no one thought to take pictures or video of the infamous meeting, eyewitness accounts from the people who were there at Presley's house in Los Angeles on August 27, 1965 all seem to differ. Even The Beatles, when interviewed for The Beatles Anthology documentary, couldn't agree on what happened.

But now, one of Elvis' right-hand men and best man at his wedding, Joe Esposito, wants to set the record straight in the new documentary "One Day Two Legends" which attempts to put a cohesive story together about what actually happened the one and only night when The King of Rock and Roll met The Fab Four.

The Elvis Presley Examiner was recently granted an interview with the producer of the film, Tom Jikomes. Jikomes, a lifelong Elvis fan who happened to be born on the exact day the legendary meeting took place, came up with the idea. "Although there is a lot written about that day, there has never been an in-depth formal interview about it and that's what we are doing," Jikomes explained in an e-mail.

Jikomes approached Joe Esposito with the concept, and together with his filming partner, Stephanie Rabiola, they have interviewed Esposito in-depth about what exactly happened that night.

"Joe was not only there, but he picked The Beatles up and drove them to Elvis' home in Bel Air and was in the room the whole time," Jikomes continued. "Joe never elaborated on that night as deeply as he does with our film...we have dug deep into Joe's memory to re-create the day as best as possible."

"One Day Two Legends" also features famous musicians and friends who express how they looked up to Elvis, just like The Beatles did, including Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees, Louise Harrison (George's sister) and some of the best Elvis Tribute Artists in the world.

To celebrate the documentary's release in April, Jikomes says, "We will be creating a concert to simulate Elvis and The Beatles touring together in their primes with the advantage of their full catalogs to draw from. We are planning to take this concert event around the world once we are sponsored.
